Just to weigh in (with my crystals, tinkling little bells, rosy pink aura; not to mention feng shui, going full speed) yes, I'd say that the new age bit is pretty much so much nonsense. Yoga excepted. I do think that it's a beneficial sort of flexing exercise, if done properly and not overdone.
Meditation, I don't know. I have neither the time nor the patience for it. One can however, get oneself into a meditative state from watching onions saute slowly, by watching scenes unfold from train windows or by grading exams for that matter, (same mistakes over and over; that can get you there, I've found ... just don't get TOO meditative or you may end up messing up a student's final grade).
The rest is just silliness, I think. A sort of pseudo-panacea by stressed sorts of individuals, as another poster mentioned. Unhappy people looking for instant answers.
