I have been asked by my school to sign a contract which will end at the end of the academic year.

But, before I agree to this I'd like to know if you can only receive severance after you have worked for one academic year or one calendar year i.e 365 days or September 1st 06 to September 1st 2007.

You won't get it unless you've worked a calendar year.

You should receive your severence pay as soon as your first contract ends. For example, my first contract doesn't end until September 10th and the new contract is setup for September 1st. So, I am assuming they are not going to give it to me until the end of my first contract. (maybe September 1st???? Not sure)

I am going home to Canada and I was hoping to get it early to use on my trip, but it doesn't look like they will give it to me.

Too bad.....

This will be my second contract at the same location and as there is no break between contracts I will be entitled to prorated severance pay.

Be glad that you might even get severence pay! I would not fret the small stuff....off a week here or there. At least you're getting paid what's owed you! THOUSANDS of foreign teachers are cheated by koreans everyday over this and other issues.

If you knew my backgroud with my school, you would know why I was concerned about the matter of severance. I am well aware that lots of teachers. including friends of mine, are diddled out of huge amounts of money each year which is therefore all the more reason for people to insist that they get what's owed to them.
