|
|
I am in Mexico right now and plan to buy a plane ticket to Korea to teach for three weeks for summer camp. What are the sentiments of the Koreans on their safety? What are the sentiments of teachers there?
I am just a little more worried since I logged on and saw several news and AP stories on my yahoo home page...and I dont have too much time on the internet here to access the stories and needless to say they arent really covering the stories on what t.v. I have a chance to watch...
ANy feedback would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks! |

are you talking about that missile thing? if so, don't worry. it's just CNN looking for something exciting to report. Koreans are not that worried. literally, it is just political fireworks. |

Korea is one of the safest countries in which you could live. Let me guess - you're an American, right?
Your biggest worry should be getting fined and deported if you work at a summer camp without a visa. |

I don't mean to jump on this guy, but is it too much to actually state what you're talking about? recent happenings? missiles? anti-americanism?
if it's missiles, south koreans never worry about north koreans. i don't know if that's wise or not, but that's how it is.
if it's anti-americanism, i've never really seen any specific anti-americanism from koreans in person. it's mainly a political thing that doesn't carry over into personal interactions very much.
if it's something else, then give us a hint. |

PS When I first saw the title of your thread I thought it would be about child saftey in Korea. That can be a seriious problem, and one you should be aware of if you're teaching a summer camp. |

Don't worry.
Koreans have been living with this situation for over 50 years.
It's like when we were growing up during the Cold War. Everyday, we could have been blown off the face of the Earth by nuclear weapons, but it never happened. Most of the time, we didn't really think about it- except for when the media was doing a big story on it.
This is just sabre rattling by the Norks to see what they can get out of other coutnries in the form of aid and concessions. |

The Norks' weapons don't even work properly, so don't worry about it. |

Yeah, for all we know he could be talking about the giant rat problem. I swear to you I saw one the day before yesterday that was the size a small cat, in broad daylight, ducking in a drain near a restaurant that I used to frequent.
So, if that's it dude--might ought to Google "rats in Korea because let me tell you--they may be some kind of mutant rats that a bunch of fizzled missiles from up in the hills will be paled by comparison.
But, this is only speculation. Please disregard this message if you were referring to something else. There are many sinister but harmless things here. So, as others have said, throw us a bone and let us know what youre talking about.

Kim Jong-Il is a psychopath with enough firepower at his disposal to kill millions of people. It's more than likely he's just bluffing and nothing will come of it. Personally, I don't think it's wise to get comfy thinking you know exactly what he's going to do next. Did I mention he's a psychopath? |

South Koreans are blissfully ignorant and indifferent to the rest of the world, especially to their neighbor to the north. If you think South Korea might be unsafe, read the papers and make a decision for yourself. You'll get nowhere trusting someone else's judgement. |

Their artillery pointed at Seoul (that could level Seoul in a 20-minute barrage) works fine, more than likely, as gunpowder is easier to shoot than computer-satellite guided missiles.
On a global scale, it's hard to rate the safety of this place. It's safer to walk around downtown at night than maybe anywhere on earth. But that is what seems to make people think Kim Jong Il will never do anything. I dunno. I think this place has a far greater likelihood for actual war than, say, the Soviet-USA cold war testiness. |

Oh and don't forget the centipedes. I've had a few in my house that look like they belong in a terrarium at the zoo. |
