Renewing passport/changing name (Canada)

I've searched this website and I've looked on the passport Canada website, but what I'm still not sure of is if I need to do anything BEFORE I go to the Canadian embassy in Seoul to change my name in my passport and renew it.

I still have 6 more months on this passport but am out of pages, which is why I didn't change my name (to my married name) before now -- they told me to wait until I needed a new one because I could spare the page.

I'm assuming I need to do this in person -- I'm just wondering if I need to download any forms or anything beforehand.

I guess if no one knows I could always call the embassy.

The Canadian Embassy is good - they save you money.. lol..

I changed my name the day I registered my marriage at the British Embassy. They said since I was there, anyway, I might as well have it done.. though I still had 2 years left on the passport, so they told me to change it then rather than wait for 2 years.

The only thing that was required at the time was my marriage certificate, and the money to pay for it.

I am not sure how different it is at the Canadian Embassy but I suspect it's pretty much the same?

As for forms - the people at the British Embassy gave me a form, which was just a passport renewal form... I am glad I was there to fill it in because it was a little complicated to say the least!

I guess you've already seen this?

the last link has be taken by surprise. What do they mean by Canadian passport are NOT renewable??? It's very puzzling???

You will need to take ORIGINALS of your:

-All three pages of the application form completed and signed.
You can download the forms or get them and fill them out there.

-2 photographs (5x7cm) against a plain white background and with a neutral expression and a mouth closed taken within 12 months
* One of the photos should be certified and signed by your guarantor
* The photographic paper must be of high quality with a matte, rather than a glossy, finish.

-Original proof of Canadian citizenship (no copies or notarized copies) (birth certificate)

-Any Canadian passport or travel document issued to you within the last Five years (your current passport)

-Documents to support identity issued by a federal, provincial or municipal authority in Canada, or local equivalent, and include the bearer's name and signature. For example:
Canadian or local Driver's license, Health card, Firearms licence, Provincial ID card, SIN, Local Alien Registration Card

-The fee ((24 page = w127,500 / 48 page = w131,750)

-Your wedding certificate (official translation required if not in English or French)

To clarify this point -
It is not a "renewal" (change to current passport to extend length of validity) with the same number - it is a new passport issuance (complete with new passport number).

All the original documentation is required again.

I think it is just a matter of semantics but why argue with a government body, it would be an exercise in futility.

Oh btw, if you don't have gurantors be prepared to have 4 references to give in place of them!

I was under the impression that guarantors were only necessary if you couldn't be there in person. I lost a passport 5 years ago, and I'm sure I didn't need a guarantor that time around.....

Nope things have changed post 9/11. If you don't have a guarantor then you need 4 references that have known you for 2 years (don't have to be korean based) and you get to talk to the consul for a little bit. This is based on my renewal last christmas at the Seoul embassy.

Ahh crap that sucks. What did the 4 references have to do exactly? Sounds like I may need to call the embassy. I don't think I have a guarantor.

You will also need to supply your addresses for the last 5 years instead of the last 2 years as well as your employment history for the last 5 years.

Luckily, I had a guarantor here in Korea so I didn't need to go through the extra crap. Just the 2 references, guarantor declaration and 2 year history of addresses and work places.

And alot cheaper fee - 89,000 as opposed to the 130,000+ without a guarantor.

Honest to God it's not like they don't know all that anyway considering the amount of information that's available to governments via their active surveillance arms. Making you write down addresses for employment seems like telling them what they already know for God's sake. If I may rail further I think it's bogus you have to pay more without a guarantor. Just renew the damn passport. If you're a citizen, were born there, they ought to cut you a break. Sheesh.
