So starting today as I was walking around various apartment complexes near me, I heard this ungodly sound. Kind of like a cross between a power hedge trimmer and a rattlesnake eating a pig. If you hear it, you'll know what I mean.

Is it...? Are they...? Is it the cicadas again? Aren't they supposed to go in some 7 year cycle or something or other? This is just unlike anything else.

There are periodical cicadas (13 or 15 years) but Korea gets the annual variety. I like the sound & miss it when it stops in the fall.

Too cool on the northeast coast yet.

I have always associated the sounds of the cicadas as marking the end of the rainy season and beginning of the intense heat -- is it possible that the rainy season has ended already? We've only really had two or three days of rain, and light at that (in Bundang).

There is a typhoon heading our way directly. Unless it changes course, we will get some pretty bad weather.

Good. This means I'm not going crazy. I asked the other foreign teachers at work an no one knew what I was talking about.

A few days ago I saw a street vendor selling these giant beetles. I think they'd make a cool pet. Does anyone know what they are or what you feed them?
