|
|
I'm looking to buy a Canon Powershot S3 when I come up to Seoul in a couple of weeks. Does anyone (especially Jinju, Indytrucks..or other Dave's photographers) know of a place that has decent prices and a good selection of cameras (as am not 100% set on the Canon).
Thanks for any help. |

| Yongsan Electronics Market--go to Yongsan station and you will see numerous vendors. They are usually pretty good in bartering and including "freebies" or additional items at a discounted cost. |

| I wouldn't buy a phone card from Yongsan their crooks. I just bought one online, if you a credit card try it. |

Thank you both for your answers..much appreciated
Jaweinseoul, what website did you buy your camera from? Can I use an international credit card or just the Korean one? |

Korean websites generally only allow Korean credit cards. It's not hard if you can get a Korean to fence the purchase for you. Yongsan is notorious for catering to foreigners and ripping them off. If you go there, bring a Korean.
Another alternative is Technomart. There are a bunch around the city but the easiest one to find seems to be at Gangbyun Station. |

| I can't believe nobody has said this yet, but go to Namdaemun to where all the camera shops are. These people are camera people and they actually know about cameras. Yongsan usually has decent prices because they are blackmarket cameras, especially Canon. In Namdaemun, they specialize in cameras, not electronics. They will also give you a discount there if you try hard enough. Of course it is always better to take a Korean person with you, but I got mine there and the guy was great and threw in some free some and I can go back any time if I have problems with my camera. Another important thing to think about is that a lot of cameras bought in Yongsan won't have the proper warranty. If that is important then you better find out. |

Thank you guys so much for the help, so I guess I should be avoiding Yongsan huh?
I'll be checking out Namdaemun since they seem to be specialized in cameras...thx ajgeddes (fellow Montrealer I assume?) |

This used to be the case, but not anymore. Gmarket/Interpark (usually at the top of the list in Omi searches) happily takes foreign cards. I used my obscure Southeast Asian mastercard this week with them with no trouble at all.
I'm a big believer in buying on-line. Korea's online camera prices are among the best on this side of the world: the Canon S2IS I bought was 320,000w (I'd seen it on some sites of shaky repute for 270,000w).. the new S3IS - mentioned in the OP - goes for 390,000w, and the cheapest Digital DLRs are in the 550-600,000w range. This is far better than elsewhere in Asia. |
