Here's part of a review taken from the Korean Times.

Quote:
The monster is realistically portrayed, but it doesn't overshadow the story, and the film is more focused on the people fighting it as the director intended.

The film focuses on a family that struggles to save their daughter taken by the mutant. But it also tackles current-day controversial issues.

``While the family fights the monster, they face challenges without receiving any help, and it naturally deals with social and political problems and shows satirical aspects of the United States' wrongdoings,'' Bong said.

In the film, a high-ranking U.S. officer oversees the illegal dumping of toxic chemicals into the Han River, an incident based on a real accident in 2000. In the movie, American scientists claimed the mutant was spreading a deadly virus, hinting at the U.S.'s false accusation that Iraq possessed biological weapons, a claim that the U.S. used in part to justify its invasion of Iraq.

Korean Directors seemingly can't make a film without stirring up some kind of hate message, whether it was the Hanbando movie about Japan or even a simple horror movie. It actually sounded like a decent movie until I read this part of the review. Ummm...How can we somehow make foreigners responsible for this....ummmmm. I'll skip it now.

Was "Swiri" the last South Korean movie where the Norks were the villains? Probably.

Now that the Norks can't be the villains anymore, they've only got the Americans and the Japanese to choose from.

I think they should get creative and make the Azores the ultra-villains.

Some hollywood movies are getting all politically correct and making up fake countries for villains. That's just silly.

This is something refreshing I have been noticing lately. When I saw the X-Men movie the other day(which sucked absolute onager balls, by the way) the crowd was scoffing and mocking the several poorly presented upcoming horror movie previews. I think Korean audiences are defintely getting more sophisticated, but at the same time, I can't remember the last time I heard about a good Korean movie coming down the line. And last year there was nothing that I can remember. Wang-Eui-Namja? Give me a mothertrucking break. Hmm....mefeels a new thread coming on.

The piece I read about (Chosun Ilbo?) said the director deliberately pokes fun at the genre, so there is a lot of comic relief.

hmm...maybe i was missing the satire. the preview seemed very overwrought and serious. maybe that's the joke.

last year...didn't Sympathy for Lady Vengeance come out? i never saw it, but i just assume it's pretty decent, because Old Boy is the end-all and be-all of Korean cinema. (and that's honestly not sarcasm).

I liked Lady Vengeance, but I don't think it even approached the first two films. And I actually prefer Mr. Vengeance to Oldboy. Happeninthang mentioned some notables from last year on another that I am going to try out, but I heard they weren't that hot. (marathon, etc.)

You must mean "maraton". Another one just like it came out this year.

I am assuming it is a transliteration of "marathon" and not one of the character's names, smarty-pants. Wink

But yeah, I heard it is about a mentally challenged or disabled guy who overcomes his disability(I am assuming he runs a marathon) and there have been a few more takes on the same theme afterwards--Korean movies are like that though: all the wacky sex comedies; all the "Shall We Dance" rip-offs and all the pseudo-Japanese horror flicks are released in packs. What's the new one called anyway?

marathon is good. Koreans love that weepy "parent gives all for her child" BS, and marathon is strictly within that genre, but it's well done. if that actor was American he'd be up for an oscar (following the equation Acting Retarded = Oscar Nomination).

Marathon sucked. Severe over-acting on the main character's part.

I was thinking about this thread last night and suddenly realised that Japan also made a series of movies that were implicitly blaming the US for their dumping of nuclear materials: Godzilla. Hopefully hate messages like this won't catch on in the US.

This does not seem to be a detriment in the Korean School of Acting.
