I've noticed a few notices around about bands heading to Korea. Is it common for NA/Western groups to hit Korea, or do they skip it and go straight to Tokyo?
Anyone out the a Ska fan? Does ska even exist in Korea, or should I be stocking up on two-tone suits and CDs now?

I would imagine the latter, save for very big acts like Metallica. There's more demand for decent (read: Western) music in Japan. Koreans by and large listen to utter shlte.

I like The Specials/The Special AKA and Madness.

Kingston Horns play around Hongdae, they are pretty good old school ska. |

You can tell he's an American by how obtrusive his avatar is.
As for ska in Seoul, I think there are some bands. I've seen some flyers about town. But, it still may not be a bad idea to load up your mp3 player with your favorite stuff before you come.
I used to like ska a lot, but found it tiresome over time. Some bands I still like are the Israelites, Madness, of course Op Ivy. |

Hey man, one more ska/reggae/rocksteady fan over here.
There's only one ska band worth mentioning in Korea, and that's Kingston Rudy Ska. There are a few other ska-punk bands, but I'm guessing you have better taste in that.
Most touring bands skip Korea. Japan gets millions of tours but we get squat. A couple months ago there was a Korea/Japan skinhead show in Hongdae, and there was one pretty cool Japanese reggae/ska band. They have a good ska scene over there and have a wicked shop in Harajuku called Rudeness where you'd never leave.
If you can survive on punk, there are a lot more options. Hopefully I'll see you around sometime. This country could always use more rudeboys. |
