I have no idea why they play this game.
a) I don't see why these (top) players' clubs don't object strongly to their assets being subjected to possible injury for the sake of a consolation game.
b) What amount of pride is attainable from winning this game, exactly? I suppose that only Germany gives a sh*t this time around...Korea last time, maybe. In any case, you lost and most people couldn't care less.
c) It must be to generate ticketing and advertising revenue only. So if they're going to have this game, why not just have a losers' bracket and make the round of sixteen and onward a double-elimination affair? Why not just take the consolation mindset to the next level and reward those teams who advanced out of group play for losing (in the current elimination rounds)? It would generate considerably more interest in the later rounds, right? I mean, if they're going to have a third place game...why don't all the teams either play for a place among sixteen or just continue to play until they lose twice?
d) Oliver Kahn should retire from football and embark on a career in efficient German porn. How embarassing to be put on the bench for the important games (especially after his performance the last time around) and then be started for the worthless third place game.
e) Jesus H. I wish the real game was today. Instead we have this poor excuse for a game--and a matchup--and it's irritating.

I suppose it's all OK. Germany beat the pants off Portugal. No big surprise.
I wish it was a little more even, but what the hey.
Now we just wait for France to torture Italy.  |

| Most countries do not use their number one assets in the "small finall". I thought it was a recent introduction but it seems it has been played since 1966 at least. |

Both teams get the same amount of money for this game, so it is a pride issue. Ask bronze medal olympians how many of them would give up their medal to the fourth place person and get nothing instead.
Also, the 3rd/4th place game is a great opportunity to play to a huge international audience with considerably less pressure to win. As a result, today's game was a great example of how football should be: less diving from Cristiano Ronaldo and more actual playing; Figo's beautiful cross to Gomes' head-in. Plus, you get to see some fun bits, like when Schweinsteiger (arguably the coolest name in the whole tourney) ripped off his shirt (no no! bad dog! hello yellow!) after his second goal and the almighty Ricardo proved to be mortal (he's still one of the best goalies around in my book).

I think the last two 3rd place winners (Croatia '98 and Turkey '02) might feel a bit differently. It seemed to mean a lot to them.
FIFA isn't free of problems, but the World Cup is a great event and I'll be sad when it's over after tomorrow's game (go Bleu's).

I'll agree with you there; most people couldn't care less indeed. Football fans, the players, and their respective countries - different story.
Please don't take this the wrong way (I'm relatively new to the WC - maybe I missed out on some great Italian football in past tourneys), but can I ask you why? Nationalistic loyalties, perhaps? The Italians sure have some skills, but their penchant for diving on the pitch ruins it for me. |

No national loyalties here. I just prefer the rough style of play that the Italians run with. I suppose it has to do with my mentality as a basketball fan...if you're going to foul, make it count. 
Plus, the French won more recently and I felt bad for the Italians when they lost the 1994 final on penalty kicks. I like both teams, but I feel compelled to pick so that I can enjoy the game more. |

Obviously the players and their respective fans care. I don't think the combined number of people supporting France and Italy constitutes 'most people.'
As for football fans, I'm a football fan and I don't care...so...
Not only that, but I'll bet you the ratings for TV viewership in non-participant countries for the third place game is tellingly low. |

That may be true, but a dependable source has told me that this is France's 2nd (or 3rd?) forray into the WC finals, while it is Italy's 6th.

Fair enough. I'm also a huge basketball fan, but the fouls made in football are just more...foul than the ones made in bball. Penalty kicks are worth more than freethrow's and to fleece the referee into giving your team a game-deciding freebie in a football match is just dirty.
