Thanks, glad you guys liked them.
I know what you mean Great Toad... I love the kids back home too but the looseness in South Korea, at least at the school I'm working at now, allows for more discourse like the videos...
I went and checked your videos out, as well. I have to say, working at a public school looks kind of chaotic... makes me really appreciate the place I'm at now... I'm sure you found it to your liking though... I think I heard one of the students say that you were their teacher for two years so I'm sure it was fine for you.
And K-in-C, as far as lessons go, I'm a complete novice... champagne aspirations, malt liquor resources/talent. I use iMovie for all the videos... so go out and get a camcorder, a copy of iMovie, find a recruiter, come back, I'll show you how to use it, and we'll start a film festival for English Teachers. |

I had been mulling over making a photo/video journal the project for my last two weeks at my middle school in August and those videos cemented that commitment.
What an absolutely brilliant and captivating way to store visual memories of one's time here: like an online Pensieve. And you do it extremely well, b.
What type of a camera do you use for the filming and what software for the editing?
Again, just great.

| flotsam...I don't know what the OP used, but I use my Panasonic MiniDV, Firewire connection and Adobe Premiere or Pinnacle Studio Pro. Woindows movie maker is actually quite robust for a freebie. |

Thanks for the kind words Flotsam, yeah, do it, you won't regret it... then share with us. It's an amazing way to make the memory of being here that much more nostalgic and meaningful, you know?
As far as what I use for gear. I mentioned earlier that I use iMovie... and it's so easy to use. The camera that the footage was shot with for SLOW HELL, WITH THE KIDS, and LIKE SALLY SAID is the new one I bought just before coming here, the Sony hdr-hc1... it's a hi-def camera that I usually manage to dumb down the image on. (about $1400). I still haven't learned how to use all the bells and whistles on it. It's small for hi-def but not nearly as small and portable as the one I had before, the Sony dcr-pc101... though the size of the h-def cam never deters me from taking it out cause I always have it with me... it's worth the image I get, you know? I use that camera, iMovie, and my Powerbook for everything on the page at Daily Motion. I'd like to learn Final Cut Pro but the hi-def render times for iMovie are already slow enough, FCP would be too much I think... I might have to wait until I get a G5 desktop. And by the way, shoot with whatever you have, some of the footage you can get with still cameras and cell phones is astounding... tough to watch if you don't have a steady hand but really interesting if you can figure out a way to do it.
Hope that helps. |

Hi,
I love you films, brilliant. One thing though, did you get permission form the parents?
A teacher I know took photographs without permission and published them on the web and it caused a big problem...I think there is an issue of consent, please don't take this the wrong way!!! |

Thanks for the praise.
As far as the permission goes, my mom asked me the same question this morning. I didn't take any precautions like that at all... I did give the link to all the parents and they seemed to enjoy it... no mention of any problems... it's definitely something to think about if I continue to do more of them. NO problems with the comment... it's totally warranted. |

| Thankyou for the kind reply, I get scared asking what could be perceived as 'critical' questions on here. I do really like your films, I'm a mac user and am thinking of buying a camera and trying something with my students. Your students have a great level of English...do you teach at a Hagwon? |

Let me know if I can help when you do take the leap. I'd be more than happy to minimize that initial learning curve.
I do work at a Hagwon, a really small one... maybe 70-80 kids in the whole school... such a contrast from what my first year of teaching here was like at a big franchise.
The kids in LIKE SALLY SAID have been taking English classes for a few years, I think the teacher before me was really good because teaching them is pretty effortless, not a lot of walls being hit in trying to navigate through a lesson plan... and there's actually a boy in the class who wasn't there that day who says the most interesting things to me... had a conversation about memory with him the other day. Needless to say, there's a piece in the making with him at the moment.
I should probably work the legal kinks out you mentioned before they come get me in the middle of the night and confiscate all my gear. |

Pretty good.
I like your choice of music. I had forgotten all about The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Going to download some now. |
Let me know what albums are good... they have such a huge catalog... a friend sent me some tracks a while back, about 6-10 from a few different albums... I'd love to have more, just don't know where to begin. |

| I love that little girl Sally. I really liked that a lot. I looked at some of your other stuff and found that pretty enjoyable too. Keep it coming. Maybe you could show me how use my mac and camcorder for the same thing. It's actually what I had in mind when I came too, I just don't really have the 'know how' part covered. It's also taken me a while to get used to being here. I thought I was going to leave after the first week. Thanks for the motivational reminder. |

| Man, that was a great video. I am still trying to get some footage of my kids, but it's not as fluid as that. |

Thanks Nate, sent you a PM.
Fiveeagles... thanks for the compliment.
Try filming them after the class has started and they've calmed down a bit. I got them hooked by shooting a little and then showing them something edited together. Once they saw the product, they wanted to be a part of the process. But it's seen as a privelege so they refrain from getting too out of hand when I photograph them. And it can be used as behavior modifying tool: "No showing or shooting video today if we don't get some work done, or if there's bad boys and bad girls."
Turn it on nonchalantly and just keep talking like you normally do, trying to hold the camera still, occasionally looking down to make sure they're framed okay. I try to have it on for when the stories come... and Sally is just a machine for that kind of stuff... she has a story for everything, and most of them are really funny and really cute. I do that with all the classes I am able to film in but Sally has it down to where she can speak and not be bothered by the camera. The other kids get nervous, you know?
Try that nonchalant approach for a few days and you'll be surprised at what you get. I have footage that I was looking at last night and it's probably better than what's in the video I finished and posted. There's something about being away from the school and looking at it at home a few days later that allows you to be more objective... it tends to always be much better than you thought it would be.
Thanks again. |

Thanks, I will try that and see how it goes. Yeah, when I have taken videos they have been nervous and it has never worked out. So I am excited to see if this works.
Yeah, I really loved how relaxed your kids were. I made this movie before and it turned out really good, because it was really casual. I don't know if you will like the video effects I did or my narration, but I really like how my cousin is so real.

I really liked the video... great moment captured. It will become more and more nostalgic as the years begin to gather. What software did you use? |
