I had a friend from Canada call today and say that there are no commercial flights allowed flying over the Sea of Japan from South Korea untill further notice. I have looked online at news websites and I don't see anything like that. Have you guys??

No, as my post says, I meant the Sea of Japan. The sea of Japan and the East Sea are the same thing.

Flight paths have been altered since NK declared a no-flight zone for taepodong testing.

I think, and hope, that the guy was only joking with his "don't you mean East Sea" comment.

On topic, no haven't heard this but wouldn't be overly surprised. Anyone remember KAL 007?

Thanks for the info guys. I just got the same phone call from my mom and she is worried that if things escalate that I wont be able to fly out. Poor women doesn't understand flights can be rerouted!! My dad is ex-military and tells me to be prepared and have some money set aside incase I would have to leave, but here in SK, not many people seem to be worried about it. Are my parents crazy or is anyone elses parents worrying like mine??

from CNN

North Korea has defended its missile tests and promised more to come, but U.S. officials told CNN there were no signs that Pyongyang was preparing to launch another long-range Taepodong missile.

I don't mean to be a jack a$s but North Korea was testing long range missiles to see if they could hit the US. Maybe your mother should read things a little more carefully. These test have not increased danger in South Korea. I am assuming that North Korea has already been able to lauch missiles that could hit South Korea for sometime.

My mom was quite nervous when I first started teaching in Korea. Then I explained to her that the latest North Korean antics (whatever they were) didn't even warrant a mention at work amongst my Korean co-workers. Ho hum.

But to make your p's a bit happier you can always formally register your presence in South Korea with your embassy--if they ever make the decision to get their nationals out of Korea and you're on their list, they'll help get you out.

Obvioulsy my mother knows that NK is testing misiles that are capable of hitting the US, and like you said, have most likely mastered ones that could hit SK. But that doesn't take away her concern for her kid being this close to a country that is being this defiant. With countries, inc. SK cutting off supplies and aid to NK, its natural to worry whether there will be any consequenses to those actions from N.K. I know usually these things don't go very far, and are somewhat resolved, but in dealing with Kim Jung Il, it seems like anything might be possible. I don't think anyone believes this situation is going to get to the point where South Korea is unsafe or in any danger, but it's still good to be prepared. Im glad I have a worrywart mother and father who are looking out for me while im here. I ave registered with the embassy and still feel very safe here. In fact, I don't even hear anything about it in South Korea from Koreans of other english teachers. I think there is alot of media focus on the situation in North America and everytime my parents and friends turn on the TV they hear "KOREA". Anyways, thanks for the posts guys!!

My point, which is illustrated by the fact that South Koreans do not seem to be worried is that this has problem not made South Korea any more dangerous than when you first arrived. I don't know how long you have been here but to me it seems that there is no reason for your mom to worry any more than she did when you first came to Korea.

as for North Korea being defiant, who can blame them. They have to deal with that crazy president in the White House who might decide to declare war on them someday. Who can blame them for their actions?

It's not missles we have to worry about, it's artillery. Specifically the chemical and biological kind.
