Do Koreans knit much? Should I pack my needles and plan on having my yarn shipped due to crazy import tarriffs? Or are knitting needles and yarn of all kinds easy and cheap enough to find?
I imagine art supplies wouldn't be too bad, but I don't eant to assume, either. I'm thinking decoupage glues and sealants, stuff like that. Pastels, paints, general you can find in Michael's, AC Moore (crafts and art supply stores if they don't hav these 2 where you are from) kinda stuff. |

My fiance is heavily into cross stitch, so I have some information regarding needle crafts. My advice would be this
Cross stitch: The thread is really expensive here and due to the size you can get tons at Michaels and bring it over cheap. I spoke to the manager at my local Michaels and received a bulk discount for my fiance;
Knitting: Ive been to Dongdemun Stadium and saw tons of material for knitting. Im not quit sure of the cost (shouldnt be too bad0, but because its so bulky I would by it here. |

I believe the "Stitch and Bitch" group are still meeting Sundays over at the "Orange Tree Bar" in Haebangcheon. They're a lot of fun! I would guess bring needles and thread.

| Oh, cool, there's and S&B. I don't even have one in my area here. Depending on where I end up in Korea, I will have to check it out. Thanks. I guess I'll bring the needles and some yarn to tide me over, then order online and have a family member ship it. |

| If you're teaching any girls between the ages of 10-18 you should find a few who are into knitting; I'm sure they could help you out. |

| There are yarn stores all over the place. You'll have no shortage here. If you're working on something with a specific color, then I suppose you should bring some with you. Otherwise, you can buy what you want here. |

Discostar, you rock! Thanks. I do not know Soeul yet, but I think I may land in Cheonho, or (I hope) Bundang or Sanbon, as the last two look like good places to live. Hopefully those are reasonably close to where the SnB is.
Thanks all. |

BRING YOUR OWN STUFF!
There's a big textile complex in dongdaemun and they sell yarn and needles in the basement, but it's expensive. sometimes you can find a good deal, but the stuff i always want is crazy expensive.
also, needles. it's difficult to find long, straight, non-wooden needles. there are a few places, but just save yourself the trouble and bring your own. 90% of the places ONLY sell wooden circulars.
i had a lot of trouble finding DPNs. i could only find them in one size!
i'm going home to canada in june and i'm stocking up big time on all my knitting supplies. you'll be happy you brought your stuff.
Maybe I'll see you at Stitch n B itch! |

In general, what sort of stores sell knitting things? Do they have them at the embroidery shops? Or, anyone in Gwangju, where do you get knitting supplies? |

These places aren't stores it's an underground market near Dongdemun station called 종합시장(jong-hap shi-jang). It's a buidling, the first floor sells blankets and underground are pillows and material.
The best place is Dongdemuen Staduim or Nundemeun Market. I've seen Dondemuen sells ,material for knitting. I remeber it being in one of the downstairs areas. My g/f tells me they also sells needles ect...
Good luck |

| If you can't knit with wool (I can't, I'm allergic), bring your own supply of yarn. Wool is the ONLY kind of yarn available here, and it's a little pricey. Needles are light and easy to pack. Bring them, unless you want to ONLY use circular or over-long dp needles. If you also crochet, bring crochet needles too. I've never seen them here. |

Yeah, some one else who needed to know too! Well, I am stocking up on lots of stuff, including wool, because if it isn't merino, I'll be dancing class like a crazy lady, trying to reach all the itchy spots! Ajumma, should I assume that wool there isn't merino?
I have stocked up on needles, although I do like bamboo, and thankfully have some one in the US who will mail stuff on to e that I order online. I won't be living in Seoul, so who knows what kind of supplies I'll find.
What about supplies for other artsy stuff? crafts, archival quality supplies-are they to be found or should I mail some stuff to myself? |
