1. R.E.M.
2. Led Zep
3. Cuyahoga
4. Out On the Tiles
REM have been a favorite of mine for years and years. Great songwriting, versatility, and excellent live shows. "Electron Blue" is as good as anything they have written, but "Cuyahoga" is amazing. Good message, the "REM sound", Stipes melodic simplicity to calm an jangly Buck. This typifies the newer REM as well; as Buck and Mills experiment with complex layers, Stipe remains simple and direct melodically. I enjoy the tension it creates. "The Lifting" is a good example of this.
Led Zep came out on top for me. The Beatles, The Stones...tough competition, but I think Led Zep were a bit more edgy and raw and took music to places even the Beatles hadn't gone. I grew up with all of this and Cat Stevens, Elton John ("Captain Fantastic" is genius)...this was a really tough choice; one which I will probably have different thoughts on in a hour. "Out On the Tiles"...groovy, hooky, powerful drumming, great riffage and Plant sings his throat apart. |

You know what I find really interesting about this thread is the fact that while a lot of you are young enough to be my kid, many of you have chosen groups that were in their prime when I was growing up. I love all those groups-Beatles, Floyd, Zep,Stones, Kinks, Who (hmmm ...what's with all the Brits?).
It's good to see |

That's my favorite LZ song too. Really good stuff. Led Zep III is probably my fave LZ album too, come to think of it..... |

1 Crowded House
2 The Beatles
3 Private Universe
4 Because
By the way, saying that The Beatles just did "pop" while Pink Floyd did "a lot of different genres" is rather ridiculous. Don't make me explain this to you... |

I'd say the new groups are not concerned with what there is to be learned. They're probably all too busy fighting for a good place under the lighting. |

1. The Jesus And Mary Chain
2. The Beatles
3. Darklands
4. "Cherry Came Too"
The best band of all time is the Beatles--although when you're talking most influential, there are too many to list.
Re: Zeppelin--very inconsistent band, although they did have some of the greatest albums of all time, their overall body of work is not nearly as impressive, and I'm not talking about numbers. |

1. Tool
2. Metallica *
3. Sober
4. One
* really could be Black Sabbath, AC/DC, or even Tool. But when I looked through my MP3 player, Metallica is the only band that I've illegally downloaded and listened to since day one. |

1. Your favorite band?
2. Who's the best band of all time, in your view?
3. select ONE song from your favorite band's (see 1) catalog you recommend.
4. Select ONE song from the band you think is the best of all time.
Obviously, if your answer to 1 and 2 is the same, you needn't answer all the questions. |
