Gumi would suit those who like a small town feel. It has all the basics that you will need to get by, but no more. It also feels like a safe community, where everybody knows everyone. For me, at least, it's just the type of place I couldn't bear to live. I like either city action, or island paradise.

I currently live in Gumi, but I live way outside of the downtown area. There are good restaurants around. There is a Mcdonald's and a popeye's chicken in the E-mart. They also have a Lotte Mart and a Home plus. They now have 3 or 4 cinemas (if you haven't been here in a while) and an Outback Steakhouse. You can also hop a train in Waegwan and go to Daegu if you want some big city life, it's only about a 20 min train ride. There are many gyms around depending on what you like. There is the traditional weight room, they have yoga gyms, taekwondo, and I take muay thai almost everyday in In-dong. I don't see a lot of waegook's around though, but like I said, I live in the country. Anyway, hope this helps.

I had a wonderful two years in Gumi. I loved my surroundings, my life, my friends. It was very comfortable and I was very content there.

Korean people always ask what your hometown is. I always tell them Gumi Wink

KFC? Have not seen it in 4-5 months here

I will agree, it is the friendliest place I have lived in Korea, out of about 5 other cities. Very little English though, so a little Korean helps.

Yeah, it's been gone ages now. I was living in Seoul when I posted that...didn't know. There used to be McDonald's and KFC downtown but they're both long gone. I don't really know why either, since they both seemed busy enough to me.

There's a new Steff Hotdog though. Woohoo!

If you are going to work in Gumi, don't work for Global Way Gook Ah Hogwhan.
The owner is a Wa*ker and a thief. Usually teachers last about 4 months before they do a runner, they have a massive teacher turnover. Also you will work a split shift.
Gumi is a nice enough city, but it can be a bit of a fish bowl, everyone knows your business. Also if you want to be a player...... word will get around fast.

Good Luck.

I noticed that too. The only other place to get them was at Lottle cinema.

Outback sounded like a great idea when I heard about it, but it's all the way across town. Mad I can go to Daegu for less.

Gumi is probably one of the best places to work. There are so many rich, high level executive types there...you can make loads of cash.

The place is a bit dirty (being the main industrial area and all), but there is a huge percentage of foreigners (it's not Itaewon, but who the hell goes there) and you can meet lots of people.

Air sucks.

There's my 20 won.

I think part of Global's problem is that they used to hire some real losers, too. On the wall outside the main door there is a row of portraits of past teachers...some of them just look like a collection of trailer park trash. Laughing All lined up with bleached blonde hair and tacky sunglasses.

There's one pic of one guy who must be 300 pounds...he definitely looks like his mother and father were brother and sister! Rolling Eyes

So I keep reading that there are lots of foreigners in Gumi....who all is here at the minute? I just moved here at the weekend, so I don't know the city terribly well yet (or at all really!)

And where exactly is there a gym or somewhere that offers yoga/t'ai chi/similar such thing? I think, from what I can gather, I'm in the south of the city, a few minutes away from the train station. Somewhere convenient to here would be great. Really need to get out and explore, but haven't had the chance yet.

Also, one of the teachers in my school said there weren't many (if any) Korean classes for foreigners in Gumi: does anyone know any different? I seriously need to learn more than hello and thank you!!

Thanks.

There are Korean classes at the Catholic Workers Center (?), it's across from the new Duklass apt complex theey're putting up, between downtown and hyeonggokdong. Not exactly sure when the classes are though.
