His could be the biggest meltdown in the history of sports.
Man, what a bonehead move. He is one of the best players in the history of the game. What was he thinking?
And that was his last game. He will now be remembered as a complete moron.

I was reminded of Steve Tasker, who was ejected from his final NFL game.
Who gets ejected in the NFL, anyway? |

It reminds me more of Mike Tyson biting off Holyfield's ear.
But Zidane's move was even more stupid than that.
Tyson had no chance of winning. He was biting off Holyfield's ear to save himself from another beating.
Zidane could have actually helped his team win. |

It's the biggest meltdown in the history of sports.
Bill Buckner let a ball slip through his legs in 1986. But he didn't do it on purpose. It was just a mishap.
Zidane's move is beyond stupid.
One could almost call it a screw up of mythical proportions. He's never struck me as a moron.
Who knew? |

I thought it was a fitting way for him to go out considering some of his actions in the past..
I loved it.. As it turned out, it didn't directly affect his team's chances (France still took it to the Italians for the last 10 minutes there)..
Meltdown? nah.. just a simple reaction to an Italian trying to hit on him by giving him a titty-twister..
I loved it. |

Apparently the Italian player made a jibe against muslims and some racial slurs about all the non-white players on the French team. Zidane is muslim. He didn't take it well.
Not the smartest move, no, but I can't fault him nearly as much as Rooney.

Can't really fault him?
What? He couldn't headbutt the guy after the game?
He cost his team a win. |

At least in the U.S. sports leagues, players' comments on the court or field can be tracked. Zidane clearly shouldn't have headbutted the defender but initial reports say Materazzi hurled racial slurs. That's not surprising considering just how well documented racism in Italian soccer is.
Thing is, if say an NBA defender knows his talk is taped by league officials, he'll think twice about hurling a slur against a black player. |

You're even putting this in the same mix as Rooney? Are you kidding me? Rooney's was totally accidentally done, while Z's was 100% intentional. Someone's obviously a French fan. |

ZZ, whilst obviously a very talented player, was infuriatingly inconsistent and basically an overrated player. Anyone familiar with his years at Juventus will know what I mean. His inconsistency cost Juve two close-run titles. In the Champions League final, he's magic. Against Lecce or Piacenza on a cold Sunday afternoon, he's dogshlt.
Maradona was an all-time great. He singlehandedly won the World Cup with a very average side. He won championships with southerners Napoli against the stranglehold of the rich, snobby north in a profoundly divided society. Zidane....there are some great things to be said, and some not great things. Have perspective. |

No, I'm not a French fan. Uncritical inferences make you look... well, uncritical.
Rooney didn't accidentally push a player. He accidentally stepped on a guy's nuts. He was ejected for the push, not the step.
Both players had violent inappropriate outbursts. One has a history of such childishness and volatility. One has a history of composure - albeit, like Spinoza noted, with sporadic quality, like mosbunall athletes.

I agree that it's a very sad way for one of the greats to go out. It kind of bugs me that they're saying that his temper problems have a lot to do with his troubled and poor childhood in Marseilles. Give me a break. He's been an international player for over 15 years. He should have learned to control himself by now. Personally, I think he's the greatest player in the world. Unfortunately, it was a pathetic and disappointing display. |
