| i've read over most of the threads where Grotto makes comments on contracts and I don't understand why most contracts claim they take 3.3% for income tax, and Grotto claims it's 1.6 or something like that. Why do these people even bother putting it on there?! |
Well, they really shouldn't put the income tax rate on the contract. It should only state that you're to be taxed according to Korean law. Or, better yet, it shouldn't mention taxes at all. It is, however better for the teacher to have the lowest income tax possible according to law written into the contract just so it's clear and to avoid being cheated.
It's not really against the law for the employer to charge you a higher tax rate, but there must be some sort of maximum. Thing is, things don't run smoothly in The Land of the Morning Calm, and employers mostly pocket the tax they deduct and don't give the teacher a statement of earnings at tax time. So, if you're overtaxed, chances are you won't get a refund unless you call the tax office and get things straightened out, or force your boss to give you said statment, etc. |
I think the maximum 5-7% |
