My employer informed me that I would need to give him my original
diploma so that he can register me with the Korean Education Board.

I remember reading the postings on here about being wary about giving
out your original diplomas. Could someone fill me in on this? Is there even such a board? He said that a notarized diploma is unacceptable.

This is entirely possible. While you're right to be paranoid about your boss wanting to take your original degree, sometimes the Department of Education does want to see the original diplomas from all of a hogwon's teachers, both Korean and foreign. This has been discussed before in these threads:

When one of my particularly sleazy directors asked for my diploma for this purpose, after he'd already held onto it for 7 months previously I balked, too. In the end, I went with him to the local Department of Education office, handed the official my degree personally, let him inspect it, copy it and took it away much to the chagrin of the director of my hogwon.

Do not give up your original diploma or passport. Always be suspicious of people who ask this.
