I was talking with my friends the other day and we got onto the topic of money. We came upon the 'how much do you save a month?' and thought that it would be a good question to pass along to here. Now I've decided to alter the question a little because we don't all make the same amount of money. Instead of 'how much do you save a month', I'm going with...

How much, on average, do you spend a month?

For those of us in the two extreme categories, could you post how you do it? Like why you spend more than 1.5 million a month...or less than 250,000/month.

I don't know what to answer. In general, it fluctuates from 400,000 to 650,000 per month, and then money for special things that I do. Lately, I have been spending a bit more money, but I went for about 6 months only spending about 400,000 a month, except for my hockey fees. I guess I will go with the 500,000 to 1 million per month category.

I put away 600,000 per month, thats for bills and living expenses, the rest goes home. My spending and travel money is my OT which usually runs to bout 1.3 per month. Smile

I noticed on this board many people say how they spend little cash for their living expenses. But what lifestyle do you have?

I mean, if you eat good food (korean and foreign) groceries expenses add up. If you go out to eat every day average price is 5000 won per meal and more. Sure, you can eat kimbap and some small-shop kimchi chigae, kimchi bokkum and the like, but that's like eating hot-dogs and $1 menu from McDonalds every day. High quality food and ingredients cost money.

I am also saving money in Korea but I do not want to deprive myself from stuff in life. I mean, I live here not like I came here for some short time so like I am counting the days to leave and saving every won eating ramyeon and kimbab. What's the point in that? Wate of time in life.

family expenses including gas (for the car), daycare, kindergarten, food, subway, personal crap etc probably comes in around 1.5 to 1.8 per month for my family of four.

(see bold)

I agree. What's more, if you've got a good job, there's plenty of opportunities for making extra green via overtime and camp. Camp's a bit of a pain - I'd much rather sit on my arse all day - but on top of your regular salary it's decent green. Scrimping and saving like so many cheaparse teachers do is unnecessary. How anyone can get by on less than 200k a week I will never know, because that's what's required to eat and live well. My answer to this question is I blow away money like a moron and still save decent green, plus next contract I get a nice pay rise. I'm always cursing my excessive, gratuitous spending and yet money just magics itself up. End of contract time is always big green time, it seems, what with severence, overtime and camp bonuses, flights home paid for. I gotta say, Korea rules! Very Happy

More than 1.5 million - but I am not a teacher and my earnings are higher. As a percentage, howver, my expenses are much less than 75% of my gross pay a month.

Though my rent is paid for, my apartment maintenance fees and utilities alone are over 300,000 won, so I know I couldn't make it for less than 250,000. My husband and I spend too much on food, but since we both work it's easy to splurge and still save. I can't believe so many Korean couples choose to live on one income.

Who says we are rich? Maybe some are but I am sure I am not.
Considering your base salary in the range of 2.0 milion + free apartment + free airplane tickets. And then enough free time to do privates and get extra cash.

Foreign workers unless they are hired to go to Korea specifically and get some nice benefits are in the same boat as Korean employees. With the same amount of money and benefits. Even in chaebols, foreign workers usually do not get anything extra. In other words, you are better off with more much more free time to spend doing whatever you want.

I was kind of poking fun inwardly. We teachers get no respect, and while we might have more free time,
some of us wonder what you non-teachers are doing.

Working.....being an international student in US getting work visa with all those quotas that are getting less and less each year, companies outsourcing and not willing to sponsor.....in IT/software industry seemed difficult. But - I'll be back ^^ Things are getting good now. How is Canada for IT? I heard in Toronto is picking up and immigration is much easier. Any info?
