| The cheapest I could find for Tokyo for end of July is between 550-630.000won return. Check out Xanadu in Itaewon or Shoestring in Hongdae. |

| You can get "cheaper" (still way too expensive) flights to Tokyo directly on the Asiana (517,000 won) and Korean Air (520,000 won) websites. I can't believe these prices! It's only a 90 minute flight dammit! |

Is that cheapest for Japan or cheapest for Tokyo?
If Tokyo.. thats really good.. I flew there during the off-season for close to that much.
If Japan.. then Fukuoka is 290,000 through Japan Airlines during the off-season (I flew there as well at that price).. but high-season, probably more.. but shouldn't be that much more. |

Why is it so much to fly to Japan? I can fly between NZ and Australia for around $300NZ (200,000 won) and thats a three hour flight.
I'm looking at heading to Sappro in Jan and I am looking at 700,000 won min. Does anybody know if it would be cheaper to fly to tokyo and train up? |

New York to Caracas at US$190 for me baby! (Much better than the NYC-San Francisco at $500 which I later took)!
Regarding flight to Tokyo and train up. Probably similar price (700,000 won) and MUCH longer. Trains are almost the same price as planes in Japan.
However, there is a one-week rail pass thats available.. 'Just Because' is the guru on that. Basically its a train from Seoul to Busan.. and ferry from Busan to Fukuoka.. and then unlimited Japan railways for a week.. and its something like 400,000 (correct me if I'm wrong, Just Because).. something like that.
Regardless.. if you really had to fly.. Osaka is MUCH cheaper than Tokyo if you wanted to fly (but Osaka to Tokyo by train is $100 and its relatively a short distance!) |

In asnwer to your first question, the flights between Australia and New Zealand have been open to competition so the prices have come down whereas the flight prices between Korea and japan(and China) are regulated so they can keep the price artificially high. look for this to change in the next decade as budget airlines start to fly the routes(like they do in SE Asia) and the prices will come down....
Second question: no, the train will cost at least 400 000 won(JR pass or not) plus whatever the flight costs to Tokyo. You are better off flying direct to sapporo...
You could train it from Fukouka to Sapporo(inc the Busan- Fukuoka ferry) for 400 000 return but the train ride from Fukuoka to Sapporo will take at least 15 to 16 hours one way......it is 7 to 8 hours from Tokyo to sapporo(the bullet train stops and you have to transfer to the slow train in northern Honshu) if my memory serves me correctly(I lived in both sapporo and Tokyo and commuted between the two and always flew)

I have to actually disagree with you tiger...usually you can get flights to Tokyo marginally cheaper, especially on Northwest as they are looking to fill seats. Also osaka to tokyo on the shinkansen is about 2.5/3 hours and $170 so it not too short(600 kms I think) |

3 weeks ahead of time, I was bummed out to hear from Kangsan that ferry tickets TO Fukuoka on Sat July 29th were sold out, and tickets BACK TO Busan on Wed Aug 2nd were also sold out.
So I got a flight instead.
Seoul-Fukuoka on Sat July 29th, 6pm.
Fukuoka-Seoul on Wed Aug 2nd, 3:30pm.
---- W 406,000 total (Korean Air)
I got my ticket from Shoestring, though Unique Travel and Kangsan Travel were offering the exact same price.
I was tempted to go through Xanadu.. It was about W80,000 more, for a ticket with Asiana Air, but that would have given me about an extra 14 hours in Fukuoka. Which is something, given the short time for this trip. That flight was as follows:
Seoul-Fukuoka on Sat July 29th, 9:40am
Fukuoka-Seoul on Wed Aug 2nd, 6pm
----- W 482,000 total (Asiana Air)
Just letting y'all know what is still available!
ps - Also, I checked out buying tickets online directly from the airlines (both Korean Air and Asiana) and in both cases they were about W50,000 cheaper in total. Also, in both cases, the airline's website has errors on it (script errors, Java errors, I dunno) so I couldn't follow through with it. And you definitely need a Korean credit card for Asiana's website.. Maybe also for Korean Air. |
