Americans seem to have a problem with Soccer because it's full of play-acting and less-than-manly behavior. I actually agree, even as a life-long Soccer fan.
But anyway, that's been covered too many times and doesn't require revisitation.
The question, the REAL question, is....why don't you get better at Rugby? Can't argue with Rugby. It's tough as hell and is of clear potential appeal to the neutral. It's discernible (has few if any difficult rules), it flows, has beauty, is exciting, uses video replays (so is fair) and is just a damn fine sport. I prefer Rugby League to (the more famous) Rugby Union personally (they're so similar yet so different) and it's open to question which form of Rugby ought to take precedence amongst US observers, if any (feel free to explore that too).
Why not do Rugby, big time? Too into your own sports? Serious enquiry. Rugby is awesome. Not liking Soccer is fair enough - there's a genuine cultural divide there, I feel - but there seems little excuse to not get Rugby. Granted Rugby is nowhere near as popular in Europe as Soccer, but its audience is still substantial.

It ain't our gig, Spinoza. It all comes down to what you grow up with.
I like take the piss out of you. But I understand European football. You grew up with it all your life. It's a passion.
American Football is our passion. Nothing will replace it. |

But all the players are gay. I think it`s bad for national morale in this time of crisis to be seeing men in tight lycra, masks, and make up bending over for each other on prime time television. It`s bound to have a moral decay type of effect on the youth...eventually they`ll start to think it`s an acceptable life style. Before you know it ANYTHING GOES! What happened to family values? |

And it ain't just pro football.
College rocks, too.
When LSU won the national championship a few years back, I literally was in ecstasy. It would be like England winning the world cup. Hell, LSU hadn't won since the 50's. |

I'm not talking about replacement, Otis, I'm talking about getting into it. Rugby will never replace Soccer for English Soccer fans, nothing will, but there's still a substantial interest.

It'll never work.
We have too many sports to begin with.
Fall and winter--Football and Basketball.
Spring and summer--Basketball and baseball.
There's no room left.
Christ, the last thing we need is another sport. We'd never make it to work. |

God Spinoza you just don't get it. I played rugby or as we call it in Canada rugger to keep myself in shape for football-real football not soccer. But most of the people i played with were Welsh, I mean it's just not a sport played in America. You say it's tough as hell? Sure it's a tough game and I loved the camraderie and violence but compared to football it has no appeal in America and it is no way near as tough as football. America's sport is football because it's the toughest sport in the world and that's the truth.
Quit trying to take the spotlight off the ultimate pussification of sport known in America as soccer. |

In defense of Spinoza, I used to go watch the Glasgow Rangers v. the Glasgow Celtic.
That could often result in a bloodbath. Not on the field, mind you. Between the fans. It's insane.
People can actually die over that crap. |

It is, man. Those uniforms turn into weapons--especially the helmets. |

I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with someone who is talking out of an orifice close to the pisser. I've played both have you? I love rugger. I really do but football is on its own level. |

I love watching football.
I hated playing it.
I only did it to impress the chicks. Nothing like scoring a touchdown. It used to really turn the babes on. |

And we all know where American football came from don't we.
(Clue: it's like rugby (rugger at my school) but with a forward pass and a rest every 20 seconds). |

not trying to hijack the thread, but LSU didn't deserve to get a share of the title that year. USC got screwed out of the championship game that year. everyone knows the Trojans would have killed both LSU or Oklahoma. |
