I don't really get the North's insistence on one-to-one talks with the US. Why are one-on-one talks 'better' than the 6 Party talks?
Since the UN is not going to do anything (again) because China and Russia refuse any kind of sanctions, isn't it logical to conclude that they really didn't object to the missile tests last week when they said they cautioned KJI? They must have said, "Well, Jong-Il, we really wish you would think again about shooting off your big missile, but we will make sure nothing happens to you if you decide to go ahead and do it." Kind of like frowning at the school yard bully, but then going back inside and leaving him to do what he wants. |

Since even China was against the tests and they still did it, can we assume that there was some sort of threat to KJI's leadership in the country, that he was being branded as too weak and that he decided he needed a good bit of defiance to keep people impressed with his leadership? If you read backwards into this test it might show that there's a bit of dissent over there that he has to keep in check. Since they're not making any demands along with these tests that's what I assume the reason for them was.

Maybe he has already lost control. A puppet show never shows the puppet master just the puppet. |

NK doesn't want China knowing they're making deals with the enemy behind their backs.
Looks like they'll get their wish. Christopher Hill has proposed multilateral talks, with a garuanteed private side-meeting with the Norks- (just the two of them, US and NK). |

Aigoo... this is simple. One, the armistice is between the US (or the UN?) and "NK."
Two, it's legitimacy. Iinm, the US doesn't yet recognize NK as a legitimate state or gov't. Right?
Three, it marginalizes SK. NK can claim to be legitimate, and, by extension, THE legitimate gov't on the peninsula.
Four, it's a "win" for the warped sort that think any "victory" is a great victory. |

My brother in Toronto works for a mining company with a lot of Chinese Engineers. He told me that they said North Koreans are extremely ungrateful for all they have done for them. Kind of sounds a bit like their Southern cousins attitude towards the USA.
It is fascinating to read up on the subject I admit.
South Korea is extremely unprepared for a North collapse and possible reunification. President Roh is disasterous for this country. I feel sorry for Koreans.
China likewise, but with the possible intention of moving into North Korea to "stabilize things". It would be nice to see Koreans forget about Dokdo anyway.
Japan would not want to see a reunified Korea with 71 million people, although I think it would take 40 years to bring North Korea up to par and it would probably bankrupt South Korea in the process. The reunification of Germany will have be seen as a cakewalk in comparision.
It certainly allows them to talk about "re-arming" with some justification anyway.
I am not sure if North Korea collapsing would be a good or bad thing for the USA. Any ideas there? |
