| Hoop Dreams. One of the best documentaries ever. Plays like a drama. |

| Just saw Everything is Illuminated last night and it impressed me a lot. I'll have to see it a couple more times before deciding if it's a great film, but it has the potential. |

I loved it. It kind of gets a little too melodramatic at the end, but I'm willing to forgive that flaw based on a) the great humor of the first 2 acts, b) the breathtaking shots of the Ukraine, and c) Eugene Hutz's Alex, a sublime performance that was criminally overlooked by the AMPAS, and possibly the greatest performance by a supporting actor in, hell, film history. |

What impressed me was how subtly it moves from the comedy of the first two acts to the drama of it's ending. What I still need to see it for is to decide whether I feel the drama went over the top into melodrama. My sense is it didn't, in part by using many devices and spending little time on each, leaving the viewer to piece together a lot of the story, rather than focusing on one thematic device too much. The rings, the river, the earth, the collections. Much richer that way.
I wonder about the conversation between the grandfather and the woman at the house.
While Elijah Wood got top billing, I think Eugene Hutz is the center of film, the real lead. Part of the greatness of his performance is because you expect Wood to be the lead and he slowly takes over the film. I also loved the grandfather.
Definitely a beautiful film and well worth anyone's time. A few more views a bit later to determine its true level, but it will be very high. |
