I mean seriously allergic, like having to go to the ER, not just the usual itchy eyes. If you're that allergic have you had trouble finding an apartment you could live in? |

many of these crazy old people believe cats are actually evil spirits. As a result a lot of places won't allow residents to have cats.
i'm allergic enough that ai can't be around them. My apartment if fine. |

I'm allergic to cats. My ex found a cat we liked and I kinda got used to it over a couple of months.
But that resistance also goes away quick-like when I'm away from cats. (I don't like cats, really.)
Are you saying you have that kind of symptoms in your Korean home? Many possible causes.
Mold/Mildew is very common and not always in the most obvious spots, not even always visible
because Koreans always cover it up with new wallpaper or floor coverings. Check the bathroom, and all drains, too.
There are sprays which are effective. Or bleach if you're cheap and lazy.
Why am I responding?? There are lovely females here fielding these questions. Just my experience here.
EDIT: didn't mean to be sexist. I just meant experienced household/motherly type females. |

for some people their reaction is psychological
i know because i have twice seen people who are supposedly "very allergic" to cats sit near them, calmly and nicely, until someone says something about the cat, then they notice the animal and react like they are being choked
in korea no surprise there's an above average amount of "allergic" responses |

I wasn't thinking of Koreans but rather foreigners since apartments tend to get recycled from foreigner to foreigner. If a cat has lived there, I can't - there's no way around it for me. I've always had a lot of trouble finding a rental place because I'm allergic. People have them even when they're "not allowed." Are you even able to reject an apartment offered by your employer? |

Not so many of us adopt cats here. And, as stated, fewer % of Koreans would ever keep one.
ASK. If you think there might be a problem, don't accept the offered home, and get a housing allowance.
But no guarantees there, either if you rent.
I'm leaving next month, and there's never been a cat here. Take over here. We'll even leave furniture and cooking supplies. |

I've been home for 3.5 weeks in Canada and can't wait to get back to Korea. My ma and my aunt and my friend are all living in my house with 5 cats and one got put down. Luv the little critters but, honestly, they make my eyes itchy and *beep* and I've had a really bad asthma attack since I've been home. I can't breathe and I feel like crap. Despite the smog and yellow dust in Korea I felt healthier in my own carpet free (ondul, hardwood floored Korean apartment) free of animals in 7 months than I have felt in 3 weeks of this place. I want to go back to Korea. Hopefully, next week. I felt healthier in Korea. |

Sure, carpet is nasty. I'll require hardwood floors when I leave.
But I'm leaving after almost 10 years for health problems.
Not sure if it's the air, water, or soju, but I gotta go. |

I love cats, and I've been allergic to them for years. Approximately ever since my childhood cat died. As much as I loved cats, my eyes would start to sting if I was around them too long. The reaction would last for hours after I leave.
As soon as I adopted a new cat earlier this year, my allergies almost completely vanished. In order to squeeze out an allergic reaction, I basically have to touch my open eyeball on my cat's fur. |

Ella, what if your school agreed to replace the floors and wallpaper before you moved in? Would that solve the problem or could you still have an asthma attack? |
