An outstanding movie. Difficult at first, yet you just keep going and it clicks.
But, it seems Kevin Spacey ISN'T Kaiser Sose, given he witnesses a tall figure in a top hat shoot Gabriel Byrne. Spacey was never on that ship, and the man who was wanted by Sose (the only guy who could identify him, correct?) saw Sose and that confirms it was Sose on the boat, also shooting Byrne. I would imagine Spacey killed Hockney (character's name).
So, my guess is that Kaiser Sose is Pete Postlethwait and Spacey collectively. Is this wrong? Your view please, Usual Suspects fans...... |

Kevin Spacey was Kaiser Sose. I'll have to rewatch it, but I assumed that when they showed Kevin Spacey witnessing the guy shooting Gabriel Byrne, it was just part of his "story"...just like the barbershop quartet in Skoke, and Redfoot (or whatever the guy's name was), and Kobiashi.
Otherwise, why would the guy on the boat draw a picture of Kevin Spacey? |

Usual Suspects was a fantastic film. Im 99% sure Spacey was Sose but with that movie who the hell knows? Great movie though. |

I noticed something in the movie that no one I've mentioned it to has ever noticed. It's very subtle, but really, really cool.
During one of the final interrogation scenes, Verbal/Soze is ranting on about how Soze needed men he knew would "march into certain death."
At that exact time, they show a flashback to his character saying "I can't believe we're just going to march into certain death" in the car, but the editing synchs up him mouthing it in the car and saying it in the police station.
Be honest...did you ever notice that before? If not, check it out. Again, very subtle, but a cool piece of editing that shows how much thought went into the movie. |

I've watched the movie incessantly recently and am a bit obsessed, and I did notice that very recently, you're right. But what other significance, if any, does it have other than the above (see bold)? |

It's been a few years since I've watched it, but I think at that point in the movie it's not completely clear that Verbal/Soze are the same person. I think it's a little nugget they threw in there to see if anyone could catch on early. |

(see bold)
you got his name right - it is Redfoot.
I guess I've never even thought about the movie in this way. Verbal/Sose telling a big lie of a story seems the logical conclusion here, which opens up a massive can of worms. I just don't get it, frankly.
What the hell really happened and what didn't?
Example: Kobayashi didn't really exist (since Verbal got his name from the bottom of the porceline cup he was drinking coffee from in the cop shop) yet the same man, Pete Postlethwait, picks him up in the car at the end.
Blimey, I REALLY don't get it. I want definitive answers, if they exist. Must do some internet surfing here.
Keep the replies coming. Usual Suspects absolutely rules! (Dan - you're nuts! ) |

Kobayashi might have been Kaiser Soze because he was the one setting up the jobs, and you're right, Spacey's character wasn't on the ship, he was a lookout. |

It pretty neat that you can love a movie so much without even understanding it! |

Love that movie, great concept and structure. I came to the conclusion that Koyabashi, the guy who picked him up in the car, was Sose. Koyabashi does exist, he just isn't called that. But if I'm wrong, I've never been one that needs to totally understand everything about a plot to really enjoy a movie... |

Mm. I completely agree. The greatest art of a fim maker is to leave the viewer scratching his head in perplexity. For me it helps if the viewer is challenged by the film, whether it be due to the complexity of the narrative or ambiguity in the meaning of the plot.
Oh, you were simply aiming a gut shot at SPINny? That's pretty "neat" too. I'd never used the word neat unless it were in relation to dressing the bed, but whatever. |
