The guy on MBC, Cha Bum Rhee (sp?), ranted most about cheating, Korea being robbed etc. Guess what? MBC won the World Cup ratings war.

That would be Cha DU Rhee actually. He played for the National team in 2002. His father is Cha Bum Rhee who played in the Bundesliga years ago and scored 99 goals. I read an article by him where he said a lot of stuff, including that Korea has nothing to *beep* about because the refs helped them in 2002, that the result of this WC was fair and that the ref was not wrong. And other things as well. Pretty much the opposite of what you are trying to say, troll.

Actually, you're right on this one. I just checked with my Wonjeongnim who told me this story yesterday. I got the names mixed up. The guy who did all the ranting was Shin something. I can't remember the rest of his name.

Remember, many Koreans before Germany 2006 thought they were 4th in the world because they came fourth in Korea/Japan 2002.

Are you in all seriousness? Those Koreans were 70 something year old folks and toddlers? I have yet to see one who simply thought "Korea was world's 4th strongest soccer team in the world!" There is a limit to making people look stupid. Smile

I think by many Koreans Cha Boom (Cha Bum Geun) is considered the most legendary hero in Korean soccer history.

56th sounds quite harsh yet not all bad. More whipping to Korea. Hell, let FIFA play around with their own rules...

Ha ha ha! That is sweet. My students tease me every day about Korea's soccer prowess and Canada's lack thereof. I'm going to print out those soccer rankings and make them eat humble pie. Wink

In all honestly though, those FIFA rankings don't make much sense. What has Canada done lately? That and Korea maybe deserved to tumble a few spots but not down to 56th spot. On the other hand...Canada kicks @ss!

You know, the last time Korea and Canada played was in 2002. It was the 3rd place game in the Gold Cup and Canada won.

That makes perfect sense for a real sport-win the ultimate championship that is the World Cup and not be ranked #1

I also agree, it should be higher than 56. I have no idea how they do these ratings.

I guess when the regular season starts up again, Korea will have a chance to drag their asses out of the hole.

Also makes me wonder who they choose to enter the tournament. Why was Nigeria not in it, when they were ranked #11?

Are you serious? There is a 4 year qualifying campaign for the world cup. Every team has to earn the right to make the finals by finishing near the top of their world groups. Nigeria lost out to the other African teams.

Goes to show how fucked these rankings are. If Nigeria lost to other African teams with mostly poor rankings, their #11 ranking should have plunged a lot.

Also answers the question why Korea made it in. Asian teams aren't very good.

Yeah, good point. Maybe there should be bigger groups, like an African-Asian group. Or maybe have the same number of spots open for the African and Asian groups, I think it is 4 and 4, but have the top 8 Asian teams play off against the top 8 African teams with the winners taking all 8 spots no matter where they're from.

I think the FIFA website is blocking Korea. It's been happening since the loss to Switzerland.

No, because I visit fifa.com every day, religiously, from inside Korea. It was down for a few hours that day vs. Swiss, but now it's been down for about 22 hours straight.

Well, since the World Cup has ended, the FIFA rankings have changed and the new rankings are out. Canada is now ranked ahead of Korea. Canada has moved up to #54 while Korea is at #56.

(Now before anybody gets angry, just realize I am making fun of both countries)

The FIFA site is still blocked, but you can check it out on other sites.

Canada ahead of South Korea in soccer rankings!? Even I never thought I'd see that for a while. Soccer just isn't big there. I know their hockey teams would skate circles around them but are you sure it's not a mistake and they don't mean North Korea? Do they even have pro soccer teams in Canada?

Then again, the Canucks played Hiddink's World Cup soccer team back in 2002 and beat the Koreans twice if I remember correctly. Not bad for a bunch of waiters and part-time players! The US at 16 seems about right.

Let's see now. Nigeria and Cameroon tied for rank #11, Cte d'Ivoire ranked at #20, Guinea at 24, Ghana at 25, Egypt at 29, Senegal at 35, Morocco at 40, Togo at 48, Angola at 55 and South Korea at 56. I bet their players wish they'd never told the media they "knew how to handle African teams" now. And those Togo 'monkeys' did alright by comparison, too. I almost feel sorry for the Korean team and the chaebol advertisers that latched on to the red bandwagon. Almost.

Yeah, but Brazil have still won more World Cups than even Italy. So Brazil at #1, sure - makes perfect sense. Italy #2, sure. US at 16#, about right, we're not great but we're not too bad either. Would you argue with the teams at the very bottom too, like Western Samoa and such who lose by margns of 15 goals (nothing against Samoa)?

The rankings seem to operate normally. If I remember correctly the Canucks had to win a couple of World Cups and the Olympic Gold to regain their #1 world ranking in hockey. And then they had to lose a couple to 'sink' to #2 or 3 behind the Swedes this year.

Anyway, whether 16 or 56, big deal, it's not like you're in the Top 3 anyway.
