http://marathon.chosun.com/eng/chuncheon/general02.html

The marathon is on October 29th, 2006. Registrations close this Friday (July 14).

This is my first Marathon ever, so I'm excited and looking forward to it. Anyone else out there running it or considering?

Anyone out there who has run a marathon and can give some advice to a newbie?

I'd be up for walking it, but there is no way I could run 42km!

Walking 42km? Wouldn't that take ages? Like, several hours?

5km/h....42km...8 hours?

It's been a long time since I ran my last marathon (1999). I ran 3 marathons back in Canada. My only advice would be to find yourself a nice comfortable pace at the beginning. Be disciplined and stick with it. I can't overestimate the importance of starting slow. Depending on how many long runs you've done, you're legs are gonna be hurting over the last 10K (the infamous wall). Here's the great part. As sore as your legs will be, you'll get a HUGE adrenaline rush by all the people cheering you on over that last 10k. The crowd knows you're doing something special and they'll cheer you on like you won't believe. Congratulations!! (in advance).

You've never been hiking?

Yeah, I do long-distance hiking. 42km really isn't that hard. I just couldn't run it! Hats off to those of you who can!

Just did the Vancouver marathon a couple months ago. My advice for you: go to a real running store and get someone to help you pick some shoes that are the right type for your feet. Spending money on good shoes is something you won't regret! Blisters, falling off toenails, shin splints or leg happiness, it's your choice Smile

Ditto the start slow. Find a good pace and stick with it. If you have lots of energy the last few miles, pick it up then.

I ran four of them in my early twenties and the advice that has served me well when I first heard it was: DON'T run them in training! It's best to get up your speed in doing 10 Ks a day, a half-marathon once every two weeks and at most a full marathon twice before the event.

And use two or three pairs of good shoes, different models.

Good luck whatever.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to try to do the 10ks a day thing.

What's the idea behind the shoes? Like, why not just use one great pair that serve me well right now?

Thanks for the advice. Have you seen any good running stores in Korea?

I'm in Daegu but could travel somewhere...
