The Vancouver City Police (ie. the mayor's personal police army) are the problem. Get one from the RCMP and it'll take 5 minutes to fill out the form and you can pick it up the next day.
Most public schools now require a criminal record check...as any decent school should. |
Do you remember what station you went to? Anyhow, today I went (again) to the same location (Hastings & Main) near where I live and guess what... I get in line, wait about 10 minutes, in a lineup of what looked to be 10 people. Then, after a while, I notice several other people waiting about 4 metres behind me across the room... I think nothing of it, other than they look a bit disgruntled. So a couple more minutes pass by, the line not moving whatsoever, until a girl comes up to me and says "you know the line starts back there, don't you?" (referring to the other people I noticed across the room). I say, "No, no I didn't know that!" So I realise that this lineup is indeed twice as long as I had originally thought. Was I to wait another hour in there? Hells no!! After asking a pissed off looking guy in front of me how long he thought it would take, he said "a very long time." God.
So again... foiled by the evil VPD and their exceptionally bad service. Where's that RCMP office you went to? Do you remember? |

| While individual schools might be, I don't think that immigration is that tough about criminal records. When I went to renew my visa in February, a co-worker came with me. She "forgot" (as in "nobody told her she needed it) her criminal record form. (I picked mine up from our office.) The immigration official pulled out a piece of paper, said "sign here" and she was good to go! For once we could say "Wow! Thanks!" AND MEAN IT!!! |

A criminal records check is not a condition of being granted a work visa by immigration. Some schools insist on it, but most don't. Koreans themselves often don't have to undertake one. This is a culture where appearance and first impressions are far more important in deciding whether to give someone a job or not. (of course, for some hagwons money is the only motivation) |
