Yesterday its pissing down rain & windy & I'm standing waiting for the light to change & some little schoolgirl I've never met is waiting there next to me. She looks up from under her umbrella, looks me in the eye, & says "Nice weather!"

I liked it. Appropriate, natural, ironic, humorous english.

A simple example, but I'm sensing a groundshift these days in the Korean approach to using english, especially the kids. They're getting it.

I play with English in the classroom.....you know, sarcasm, irony, puns and general goofy stuff. The kids love it. And when they get the hang of it they make up their own.

Foe example, a couple of classes are now saying, "die! die!", instead of 'bye! bye!'. I'm not sure if I approve of that one though!! But they giggle like mad when doing it so I don't have the heart to stop it.

Mine are saying "yellow" instead of "hello". Why, I doubt even a supreme being would know. But they love it.

Sometimes it's the nicely simple answers that really get me. I have one student who I'm becoming fond of because she really thinks outside the box without showing off or using big words... she just says what needs to be said. The other day in class we were all talking about clothes and when you wear them (you know, "I wear a swimsuit when I go swimming"). We got to "jeans" and it was Mary's turn: "I wear jeans when I want to wear jeans." As if it was the most simple question ever. After a good 30 minutes of "I wear tennis shoes when I play the basketball" this was a welcome change of pace.

It is nice when they get these things. My favorite thing to say when i leave the classrom is "see you.....never!".

Or when reviewing questions..."Sung Yoon, please answer 2A...and Jae Ho, 2B......", then i shout upwards, "2B! or not 2B! That is the question!"
-well, they don't quite get Shakespear yet

After learning Nice to meet you, Glad to meet you, etc. I had a student say
"Angry to meet you." They get it eventually.

Beautiful ferret, chipotle. Yours?

Thanks. Yep, that's Nora. Although technically she's not really mine any more. She's living with a friend back in the states keeping company with another ferret, Slim.
