is it ok to do this at the airport, or is the rate that much different than elsewhere? |

Get a few thousand here from the airport - get smaller bills (100php or 500) if you can. The airport likes to pass out 1000s and no-one there can cash them.
The best rates there are usually from the money changers but if you are NOT travelling to a place where Koreans travel to frequently (like Boracay or Cebu) it will be hard to exchange won.
You can always get a few "hundred dollar bills" (USD$100s) before you leave. You can exchange them almost anywhere. (money changers / hotels / malls / department stores). |

The best rates ARE from the grey market money changers - drop the won here - Won are darn useless outside RoK (so much for RoK being a financial powerhouse). Get greenbacks here and exchange them for pesos in RP - the gray-market is higher, so you do not lose in the double exchange.
SM (department store) and now are almost everywhere usually has a FX outlet. Else most any grey market dealer - do check around for the best rate. Do NOT exchange with some guy in the street.
Hotels and the like give a lousy exchange rate. |

Do not change the won on the tourist part of Manila. Take the sky train north to the end of the line. There is a mall with a money exchange in the basement - go there and you'll get 20% more money. |

Definitely change your won into dollars before you go. I've posted this info probably 3 times here on Daves...you'll get about 40% more if you change to dollars and then change your dollars into pesos when you get to the Philipines.
If you want, get a few pesos here in Korea, but the airport exchange in Manila will be open, and we usually just exchaged $20 when we arrived and waited to change the rest of the $ outside of the airport where you get a better exchange rate.
I agree with above posters: DO NOT take Korean won outside of Korea--you'll never be able to exchange it!

BTW
it's FilipinO pesos. Filipina refers to a lady from the Philippines
should mention, if you do carry greenbacks in qty, a moneybelt is a darn good idea
Associated question: my local FineBank tells me there is a USD 10,000 limit on FX - they stamp your friggin passport when you exchange (talk about totalitarian mentality!). Is that for calendar year? |

thats what I did as well.
Most of my Won went into US$ (done in Itaewon).. as well as some Won into Peso beforehand - immediate landing spending peso money.
The airport in Incheon also exchanges Won into Peso - even if its not on their exchange rate board, they still do. I've done this a few times as well. Not all of them at the airport will have Peso available, but if you go around to a few, you'll find one with peso available. |

How is the exchange rate for dollars to pesos on Boracay?
Does the airport in Manila offer a better deal? |
