So I got the ska question answered... whats the hip-hop scene in KR? I'm kinda looking forward to Korean hip-hop. When I was in France I managed to catch a show there... I laughed my balls off (and almost got the crap kicked out of me for it).
Any chance Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Immortal tech, J-Live or others come through?

Well, hip-hop is one style that Koreans have totally embraced. I sure wish they hadn't.
They don't like good stuff, though. They like the stuff that is targetted at the 15 year old audience and the hood rat style- 50 Cent and all the other douche bags like him. |

Yup. Expect to hear more Nelly than Mos Def. Occasionally you'll find a good DJ at a club who knows what he's doing, but most of the hip-hop you'll here in Korea spent some time on TRL.
Korean hip-hop is, for the most part, utter garbage. They're either too campy, or too serious, which is a laugh.
Drunken Tiger is the only standout that comes to mind. I bump their $hit all the time, especially the new album 1945 해방. |

I've witnessed some hip hop in Korea but am yet to witness any signs of a hip hop "culture" with real depth. I am sure that for the Koreans involved it is culturally significant and valid but from my understanding I believe it is very much a surface level culture here. |

Of course. Does anyone think these wannabe hip-hop douche bags is really gangsta? Are they really "down"?
Like I said, they wouldn't last 5 seconds in the hood! |

As far as Korean hip hop goes, there is a pretty limited selection of stuff that's actually worth listening to. However, the ones that are good are really good. My favorites, in order>>
Defcon
Drunken Tiger
Dynamic Duo
Leessang
Really, Defcon is two or three positions ahead of the next on the list. His music is off the chain. Some of his beats are among the most creative I've ever heard. He's sorta like.. on the outskirts of hip hop, like Outkast or MF Doom.
Have I been to any live shows? Not yet, and really I don't think I'd wanna. But maybe.
