Flotsam,
I was rather worried when I read your first sentence and didn't understand any of it...glad to see it was Urdu which I don't undersand.
You're right about Kufic, that's the script used in newspapers I think...probably because it's the simplest to read.
My favorite though has got to be Andalousi (part of the Maghrebi scripture) it's simple but elegant. |

I have. Live in Moscow. I think Russians are way more racist than xenophobic. They go out of their way to tell me how much they want to go to America but that they don't like black people.
Call up a busy restaurant with a foreign accent, you'll get the table reservation where the average Russian may be told that they're full. Foreigners are considered worthy clients.
And if I get in a fight, defending myself on the metro. I sure as hell won't be getting deported. Russian cops may ignore you or be completely unhelpful, but that is equal opportunity- everyone gets that treatment. There isn't an institutionally negative attitude towards the foreigner that is present in SK.
If anything, there is a perceived perception here that the foreigners have tons of money to burn, encouraging police to take your bribe money or real estate agents to try to sucker you into an apt. 2x its value.
It used to be that foreigners were required to have yellow license plates on their cars, glad those days are over.
Of course, I'm white, but I may as well have American stamped on my forehead, as I do stand out even in this crowd. If I was dark skinned (Caucasians are the favorite targets of the skinhead crowd) things may be different. |

I've only been to a few countries in Asia. I've seen xenophobia in Canada too. I'm a newfie: I've seen it among my friends: my god, look at all the Asians in Vancouver!
Korea still tops my list. I can barely imagine North Korea. But when you go out to the sticks, no matter the country, the local yokels will be disconcerted. I encountered this in Korea, in my home province, in Taiwan, in Thailand, in Vietnam, in japan...
Outside the main areas where they are used to outsiders, it's always the same.... discomfort around the unknown.
Isn't this just human? The unknown worries us? Or is a bit of fear of having to try to step outside the familar? |
