Hello people:
I had been seriously considering working for a gagwon in Ansan. The other day, the director mentioned that a "gagwon wide" school closure will take place commencing late July through August 1. I pressed him for an explanation and he said it was related to the asian heat wave that occurs at this time?
Can someone confirm if this is true, or is this guy really slinging the bull? If it were true, my reasoning would be that the gagwon management would vote something absurd like this in to save on the a/c bill. |

What the heck is a gagwon?
While it is true that schools are closed for a while in the winter to save on heating bills, the presence of air cons in schools is SO new and unusual that you can't possibly pin summer vacations on them. One of the charming things that I miss from '94 is that apartments at that time turned off the heat in the whole building because 'only' women were home. Not all change is progress. |

Is there anything going on at your present school now between you and your supervisor? |

Glad you asked: I coined the term, "gagwon", after it seemed apparent how often ESL teachers (myself included) were being shilled into the private academies to teach under rough conditions (read many problems). Because the teaching conditions in many of these places are crappy, the gag reflex can take effect. Hence the name, gagwon, which also rhymes somewhat with hagwon (depending on how you pronounce it).

Alabamaman, I not on their payroll yet and we haven't had any kind of falling out. I'm baffled as to why he would say something like he did about a two-week closure of gagwons in the summertime. |

well, from what I know . . . the director of my hagwon and the Korean teachers have both said that the last week in July and the first week of Aug. are the most humid and hot so that is when the summer vacation is.
Albeit we have only a weeks vacation in summer, most Koreans will be on vacation during one, if not both of the weeks.
have fun!
you, me picnic! |
