So, it's pouring out and I'm shocked there are no posts on it.
I drove over the bridge earlier (Banpo) and the Han was the highest I've ever seen it. Not only was the whole park covered, but the waters were approaching the highways that run along side it.
So far 12 are dead and dozens missing.

I think I'm going to take a quick walk down to the Han and snap a few pics.
Anyone got any stories so far? |

Well,
I live right next to the Han river just before it goes into Seoul, and i can tell you, certain routes are already being rerouted, everyone parked there cars outside, instead of inside in the basement for obvious reasons, i have seen a lot of disaster tourists, driving from TM in the direction of Guri
let's see what happens. |

Wow. I'm in Suwon and it's been raining almost nonstop for days, but no flooding or anything dangerous I've seen.
My socks got wet when I took out the trash, though. grr.. |

The BBC has got the story up as well.

Ten die in South Korean flooding
At least 10 people have died and another 17 are missing after heavy rains hit South Korea, the emergency services say.
There were flash floods and landslides as monsoon rains inundated the eastern province of Gangwon.
More than 2,000 people are reported to have fled their homes and are in emergency shelters.
The severe weather is forecast to continue over the next few days with the capital, Seoul, also affected.
The 10 confirmed victims were killed by mudslides in Inje, 165km (102 miles) east of Seoul, and Pyeongchang, 180km (112 miles) east of the capital, the emergencies agency was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
There were no immediate reports of possible flood damage in North Korea, South Korea's neighbour. |
I took some pics of the Han that I'll try to post up tomorrow. |

Anyone know if there're problems down in Gwangju/Jeollanam-do. My apt. is on a hill, but I'm still concerned. |

Ours leaked on Thursday after that 39 cm we got in Ilsan. Had a dribble yesterday, but nothing like Thursday. |

Yeah, I've got a section of soggy wallpaper. At least it's not the section above the electric outlets. |

Ha! I can hear all the old timers out there saying, "Back in my day the Han River completely covered the expressways during monsoon season, it rained UP . . . and we LIKED it!"
your turn . . . |

I've been lucky that in all my years here, I've never lived where there was any kind of weather-related destruction. (I don't count a few downed trees and missing segments of wall here and there.) I've seen lots of disasters on TV, but never lived through one. *frantically searches for wood upon which to knock* |

Not being cold, but this kind of thing happens whenever there are torrential rains in Korea.
I recall about 4 or 5 years ago, the same kind of thing - lots of rain in a short time - and some people were killed and others had to flee their homes.
It's usually the poorer people who get hit by this, and they are typically country folks who live in old, flimsy houses near the base of mountains. This is why the majority of wreckage has been in Kangwon. Inje, Kapyong and Yang-yang were pretty devastated.
Driving to work last week, half of the highway to Seoul had fallen away, down into the river. It had only just happened - there were no emergency crews out yet, and the passing lane was unmarked. There were no pylons of anything to warn drivers of the damage ahead. The ground under the road had just fallen away, leaving a dangerous drop off into the river if one wasn't paying close attention. With the near blinding rains, it was really scary. I stayed out of the passing lane from then on for fear of the road falling from under me.
Personally, I am on the top, 18th floor, of an apartment, watching the river next to our building swell to great heights, and watching garbage flow by in the brown, silty water. Cans, bottles, huge amounts of styrofoam, plastic tarps, tires....an endless stream of garbage in the river for the last 4 days, going who knows where.... |

I live just off the bottom right of that shot: an impressive sight from my balcony .... the level does not seem to dropping yet. Parallel routes along the river will be fun in the morning .... |
