I've been buying gold and 90% silver coins for a few months. Instead of sending money home and buying them online, I'd rather find a place I can buy either gold bars or gold coins somewhere in Korea. Since Seoul is the center of Korea, I'm assuming that's the place to go.

Can someone tell me somewhere to go to buy gold (and possibly silver) coins/bars in Seoul? Thanks!

Excellent question, and if you find somebody who is selling, please let me know.

You'll probably want a reputable coin like the Kruugerrand or Canadian Maple Leaf and so far, my searches have yielded no results.

It seems that most Koreans, like other Asians invest in jewellery, and as youre in Asia you should have little problem converting it back to cash. Koreans measure gold in the Don, 7.5 Don is about an ounce of gold. Koreans seem a bit lax in setting their gold price to the international gold price, and occasionally youll have a window where you can get 24k gold here cheaper than the international price of that day. If youre willing to settle for jewellery, then Id suggest the Gangnam jewellery arcade which is located just outside of the Express Bus terminal. This place offers a 30% discount on the jewellery charge which is charged on top of the gold price for the crafting of the jewellery itself. Be wary of overcharging as youre a foreigner, watch when the Koreans take out their calculator and calculate the percentage discount, youll usually see them tap in a 20% discount, which isnt good enough. Take a Korean with you, or move on to the next vendor, there are hundreds of them.

Otherwise you can invest through www.goldmoney.com or order coins through www.kitco.com. Check out gold money, apparently they dont work on a fractional reserve system (like our wonderful banks) and offer delivery of the gold if you wish to take possession of it.

As for silver, Im at a loss. I bought a couple sterling chains yesterday, and paid double the value of the silver. Its my bet that silver will out perform gold in the long run and Im desperately looking for a coin dealer. I had one fellow in the Gangnam arcade offer to mint me 100% silver coins, but if youve been here long enough you should know not to trust Koreans in their business practices quickly. PLEASE let me know if you locate anyone who is selling silver coins.

Its a pleasure to meet someone in Korea In the know, please PM me and we can coordinate our efforts.

The use to be a place in Itaewon, down past the BK on same side of the street as the BK, and on the same street as the Hamilton Hotel. That was about 6 months ago.

The U.S. just recently (June 20th) started minting and selling pure gold 1 ounce coins, in the image of buffalo nickels. Don't know how to buy them in Korea, though.

Quote:
The United States Mint unveiled its 24-karat American Buffalo gold coins Tuesday, the first time the government has made 99.99% pure coins for investors and collectors.
The U.S. Mint in West Point, N.Y., will produce the one-ounce coins in both a bullion version for investors and a proof version for collectors. The coins are to go on sale on Thursday.

They feature images on one side of an American bison, as on the classic Buffalo Nickel of 1913, and on the other an American Indian. Although the face value is $50, the price will depend on the price of gold, plus markups.

According to the Mint, it will sell the coins to authorized purchasers based on the current price of gold, plus a premium to cover minting, distribution and marketing. Those purchasers will be able to sell the pieces to the secondary market.

The price of the proof coin, which bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point mint, is $800.

Namdemun there's a shop. It's on the corner.

Say if you're going down the main drag from Seoul Station to City Hall. Heading towards City Hall. You've just passed Namdemun gate and there's Namdemun market on the right. Well right on the main drag on the right is a shopwindow and there are gold coins in the window.

Actually, I've been buying them from Apmex.com. They are very reliable and all, but I'm sick of doing it all by internet. I'm not interested in overpriced American .9999% gold because it is also too soft and not suitable for carrying/moving around. I'd like to find a reliable place I can spend about W1/2-1 million won per month. Either bars or coins.

Pardon my ignorance, but why would you buy physical gold and silver instead of those certificates?

I wanted to start buying gold more than a year ago (but stupidly waited), it's going to keep rising. I wouldn't be surprised if we see gold at 1k/ounce within 2 years and silver at more than $20/ounce. (A year ago, no one would have believed gold at $700/ounce!)

I wouldn't touch e-money or certificates for 2 reasons:

1. Posession is everything when it comes to money (and valuables).
2. I don't trust someone who says they're holding gold for me--I'd rather hold it for myself, thank you.

I sold my Krugerrands about 1980-81 for roughly US$800 each. Had bought them for about $450.

Buying at the top is my usual hobby - but in that case I got at just at the right time.

Now - if I had held those babies - what 26 years later - I would still be down . . . REALLY down if you consider inflation and devaluation of the buck.

When everybody gets excited and starts buying - is a good time to get out.

I went to that shop, the owner is an old Korean who doesn't speak English and evidently doesn't like foreigners or something. I asked about the coins in the window and he wanted about 2 times what they were worth. He wanted more than 1 million won for a one ounce gold coin, I said thanks and left. I walked by later the same day, and a younger guy was in there. I stopped by to ask him if he spoke English and wanted to ask about the coins. He got very nasty, so I left.

I did find a market not far from there that has a lot of jewlers in it and found a beautiful brilliant uncirculated 1912 (1/2 ounce) gold eagle that I bought for W350,000. The condition it's in is at least 40% more than what I paid for it. I also bought a 1989 1/2 ounce American gold coin for the same price. The going rate of gold is about W21,000 per gram right now.

I also found out that most Koreans aren't interested in gold coins they usually buy them as jewelry, little items like gold balls (etc...) and in a small stamped hunk of gold they call a "dong." It's a traditional Korean weight that is about 37 1/2 grams. He quoted me a price of about W780,000 for it. He was very nice and I asked him about the old man who has the coins and basically he said the old guy hates foreigners and gives them such crappy prices no-one buys there. He only wants to sell to Koreans.

In another post, someone said:

"The use to be a place in Itaewon, down past the BK on same side of the street as the BK, and on the same street as the Hamilton Hotel. That was about 6 months ago."

I guess I'll try looking there the next time I go to Seoul.

you ever read George Elliot's book Silas Marner ? Smile

take a trip to Vietnam and buy a ton of silver. Just make sure you go to a certified coin shop and not off the street if you don't know how to identify the real from the fake. I picked up a slew of French Indo China piastre 1 ounce silver coins a couple of years back and their worth has more than doubled, never mind checking their coin value.
