Took me years to learn not to do that. Have you ever been assaulted in the classroom? |

Would you not consider the perfect class is where the teacher creates a situation for student interraction and then merely has to correct and lead in certain directions?
The teacher should be aiming to speak as little as possible. The first mistake many teachers here make is this. They do not know when to be quiet and listen to what the students have to say.
In fact in a class discussion where all students are active, the teacher should be working harder to ensure the objective is met.
The idea of discussion is to hopefully have the students thinking in English . |
While that may be the ideal class, there is a world of difference between ideal...and what many (if not most) Korean adults expect. Having the teacher talk is how they were taught in school and university. |

| yep that's true. Absolutely no opportunity to promote critical thinking. Shouldn't the promotion of such be an objective for any advanced language class? |

Yes,maybe at first because this is what they are used to. It doesn't mean just because they like it that way, it's the best way to teach. Most communicative language methodology will emphasise the opposite, the idea is to have as little TTT (teacher talking time) as possible and maxamize student language practice. I like to do a bit of traditional teaching as well and try to balance the two so the lesson suits the needs and abilities of everyone in the class.
However, you have to TELL the students this, introduce them to the concept, even if they know all about it, because your method may be different than the last teacher. This is mistake number one when teaching adult learners in my experience, just giving students tasks and not the ideas behind them.
Tell them what you're doing, tell them why you aren't lecturing in front of the class, your rationalization behind it. They can handle these concepts. They appreciate it. If you don't know, look it up.
My example above about a game board, many adults think it's stupid until I tell them it's a comprehensive grammar review. Tell them you will be listening for mistakes on one particular grammar point, vocabulary item. |

Flatting = living in a flat, i.e a rental house or apartment.
Mixed = with members of the opposite sex
Mixed flatting = (unmarried) males and females (= flatmates) sharing living quarters. i.e separate bedrooms (usually ) but shared living room/kitchen/bathroom etc. |
OK, I see. We call that "cohabiting" or "cohabitation". At first glance, I thought mixed flatting might be having an apartment building laid out with individually designed units, each offering different floorplans and square footage. |

I'm often totally mystified about what adult students want in Korea.
I used to get complaints about all manner of things.I once asked a student what she felt her weaker points in speaking English were.I would only see her for 30 minutes maybe once a month.I thought it would help to render the quick. She complained that I wasn't "leading" enough. Her English was great and she'd lived in Russia too.Baffling that she was so put off by the idea of actively analysing her abilities.
Other times...complaints that I wasn't" meshing" with the students....after meeting for 10 minutes in a placement interview.....jeesh....never even taught them!I'm not that sociopathic.
My favourite though is the student that compared me to their previous teacher around world cup time.their last teacher would go with them to City Hall, movies etc. When I said I'm generally busy he said....
"You're not like my old teacher...you're like a doctor"Haha!!
I never got any complaints over subject matter or lesson structure. The constant problem that was they couldn't sit back and be passive.Even active listening didn't go down too well.Playing a listening tape they wouldn't even follow the text, they would just sit back and go into a state of osmosis.1 or 2 would fall asleep. |

| Critical thinking ought to be seen as promoting fluency rather than just accuracy.Could this be the problem?ie that they are often too hung up on accuracy for the sake of accuracy? |
