STEREOTYPE?

Here, I'll save you all the hassle:

Stereotype - n. - something conforming to a fixed or general pattern; especially : a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment

I don't care about what a dictionary says; I care about what you think a stereotype is.

I kind of get them mixed up. What is the difference between a stock character and a sterotype?

Interesting. I'm no linguist or debater, but can't an individual have stereotypes? I was about to give examples from me
'til I saw that line (blue.)

My definition of stereotype:

I know who you are, what you think, how you act and your value as a human being because I know what group you belong to. You may as well give up and just follow my script for you because nothing you can possibly say or do will make me change my mind.

For example, Fidel Castro can't be all that bad because Ricky Ricardo was a pretty cool (but excitable) guy, and a little stupid for letting Lucy pull the wool over his eyes so often.

If I had anything more inciteful to contribute, I would. Unfortunately, you didn't give me any hook to grab on to. All I can think of is that ethnic Cubans should avoid women with a weakness for Vitavitavegemin. Or take advantage of them. Very Happy

a given definition of a word has little to do with how a word is used

This is just a way wild guess, but from cubanlord's previous posts, I gather that he is perfectly capable of googling up a dictionary definition of the word. My take is that he was asking for what we actually mean when we toss the word 'stereotype' into a post.

Yes. You are exactly right. The definition of a word taken from a dictionary is very different than the definition that an individual would have. It's like saying, "describe the color blue". Here, you would get a plethora of answers like:

sad
dreary
ocean
sky
faithful
etc.

That's my point. Now I feel, as Yata would say, there's a hook. Can anyone latch on?
