Very true. YOU, THEIR TEACHER, must show them (at first) that you aren't there to babysit, be their nanny, or their monkey. You are there to teach. Simple as that. Afterwards, once the students see you are there to TEACH, you can lighten up.

The last one I had to create and enforce after a month on the job and let me tell you it works like a charm. I was amazed at the sh*t these girls had an there desks, stack of books, alarm clocks, toothbrush/paste, cup, staplers, scissors, post it notes, a pencil case with 65 writing utensils etc....
All of these items were usually the source of distraction that led to bad behavour

Great idea - but where do they have space to put all that shit? If you think middle school girls have a lot of shit on their desks you should see high school girls. Sometimes it's hard to walk up and down the rows because of piles of books. They're there from 7.30 am until late into the evening so it's hard to blame them - their desks are their homes for most of their waking hours.

Each student has access to a little square locker at the back of there class, i make them put it in there so that its all out of the way. I have noticed a few of the korean teachers have also started to enforce this rule.

If they don't have a locker just get them to put everything under there desk for your class.

Mine have lockers like that too, but I think it would take them five minutes to accomplish such a simple task like that. I usually arrive a few minutes before the bell and am doing well if I can have them all in their desks with their textbooks by the time the bell rings.

I do end up confiscating a lot of shit, however.

Explain to them that they MUST do this prior to the start of your class. They have 10 minutes at least in between classeswhich is loads of time to accomplish such a simple task.

If a student doesn't comply punish the whole class, it will happen next time.
