I've been seeking out the hot art supplies stores - found one in Insadong of course...will cost ya a pretty won but they do carry everything I need (I generally work in oils). Found another one close to where I live in Incheon at Gyesan station. The prices there are so low, but I cant even get a flat canvas there...they only got the framed ones, which aren't ideal for travellers. Has anyone found the art store for idealists? Decent prices and selection? I'm not fussy about location, navagation is a part of the fun. If anyone out there has got the low down I'll be grateful for my remaining time in this country! |

There are quite a few around samgakchi station.
My favorite is:
Go out exit 3. (I'm sure it's exit three, if you are going away from the intersection that leads to Itaewon/Yongsan, you're going the right way.)
Go straight up til you get to the first lil' intersection and it's there on the corner.
(Looks like a typical frame shop, but you'll see oodles of pictures all over the place, so you'l know you're in the right place)
They've got lots of paints on the wall to your left. Lot's of blank canvases. And they'll even make custome canvases. But they don't really speak English, so good luck. But they've always been friendly and have great prices.
Feel free to pm me if you need anything else! |

I was about to ask the same question myself. I saw the shops around Samgakji (on the street between Samgakji and Sinyongsan) and just popped into one briefly. I saw the oil paints - reasonably priced at around W2000-3000 a tube. Do they also carry brushes? I didn't bring any with me, and my friend will probably never get around to sending me another package - I'm still waiting for one I wanted sent 6 months ago. |

Namdaemoon market. though the un-stretched canvas or linen is pre-jessoed, the price/qualty is right. also, paints are a tad less than elsewhere.
Hongdae is good for supplies. many art hagweons and the uni. there mean several art supply stores. |

I've also found hard to find art supplies at Kyobo bookstore in the past.
I haven't been there in a few years but they used to have a good selection of brushes, cool paint colors, turpentine, oils, gels, etc... |

There was a similar thread to this about two months ago. I posted a query looking for art supplies. Someone recommended a building in Namdaemun which apparently is a huge supply center, but I didn't find it myself yet. Another person recommended a store in the basement of Express Bus Terminal on line #3. I can't remember the name of that store, but it was quite huge. Prices were too expensive for me. It was a much bigger store than the typical neighborhood stationary shop, but the prices weren't much better.
I would link to that thread here, but I don't really know how to use the search/linking functions of this forum well. |

You can always remove the painting (when it's dry of course) from the stretchers and roll it up. Travel-friendly art!
I've been wanting to get back into painting but oils and turpentine in this tiny little apartment? I'll be dying from the fumes.
Has anyone signed up for art classes at a university here? Is that possible and affordable? Might be worth it simply for the studio space. |

| This has all been quite helpful...Thanks Sir Fink for the idea of removing it from the frame, not sure why that never occured to me - too much oil paint in a small apartment. I'm also interested in art lessons/studio space. Does anyone have info about this? I'm going to attend the Latin dance performance/art show for orphans at La Festa on July 28th which is posted in general discussion...As local artists are exhibiting there I'm hoping to maybe get some info from them... |
