Oh my Gott!
crazy!
usually such words are dropped when you are in earshot- be it on the subway or wherever. Will someone please tell koreans that these phrases aren't actually witty or original, much less actually used much in english? A couple of times I've had to ruin the cheap thrills of a Korean who thought they were actually being smart.

Look, why don't you just tell us why you are having a bad week and whine about what is probably a better reason to whine and moan about. Otherwise, seriously, just shut up already. |

I don't understand why laogaiguk reacted like that. This topic has been discussed before without people acting all superior.
Definitely 'crazy' is the most commonly misunderstood. No matter how many times I use the word, the students - without fail - always burst out laughing.
Same with, "Oh my God".
Now, if only I could get them to stop saying, "Oh sh !t," without letting them realise how inappropriate the word is (in which case they will use it even more frequently). |

| 'CALM DOWN' and 'RELAX' annoy me. They pop into an exchange totally out of context and inappropriately - generally when you ARE completely calm and relaxed. |

First of all, that wasn't superior. I suggest you look the word up.
Second, while I can understand you don't know where it is coming from, have you not noticed all the recent posts by Junior? He got what I was talking about. He has been rather anti-Korea this week and has said a couple of times he is sorry for his posts because he has been having a bad week. It wasn't an attack in the normal Dave's site kind of way. He has been on a rampage yet hasn't said why (that I have seen atleast). |

Almost any English appears funny to many Koreans if they can say it knowing the foreigner will hear it.
Chances are they won't even be talking to you at all, just using it because you are in earshot. That makes it funny. Great joke.
It's really clever how imaginative and witty they are, not to mention polite, when they decide to use their 12 or 15 words of English because you are near, though absolutely none of it is directed at you, it's just a great little joke you have only encountered a hundred times before. |

My Russian students used to laugh like hell whenever I said the name "Peter". Apparently it sounds a lot like "педер"... slang for pedophile in Russian.
I found this amusing, because one of their national heroes is Peter the Great. But in Russian it is pronounced "Pyoter". The students thought is was funny to hear me talk about their great national pedophile. |

I have a confession to make.
Last month while I was at Walgreens waiting for my prescription, there was a large group of Koreans on a tour that all came in the store and they were everywhere....walking around the aisles, you could hear them chatting in Korean.
I picked up my cell and called my wife, speaking Korean loud enough for them to hear me. 
My wife on the other end of the line: "What the hell are you trying to say? "Why are you speaking Korean?? Speak English damn it, I have no idea what the hell you're trying to say!" |

Haha, yeah no fish. Any time I have a student gazing off, not paying attention, or especially if I'm losing all of them during a boring explanation, all I have to do is use the word "crazy", regardless of how inappropriate it is for the sentence, and instantly they're all back with me. Even with my oldest students (9th grade) this works. It's amazing. |

| My students have always laugh at the word "kitchen" because they think it sounds like "chicken". 4 years here and I still don't understand it. |
