In pop music there is the phenomenon of the one hit wonder. The person or group that manages that one moment of fame and glory. It may be the result of talent, or it may be the result of a bribe to the right DJ at just the right time. Or who knows?
But here at Dave's we have our local version. The one hit wonder, the one note poster. No matter what is said, they respond with the same post, ad finitum.
One of them is Real Reality. He only posts what is wrong with Korea. Oh, and yes, with complaints about why someone with a third grade education isn't treated with the respect due a full professor.
Then there is WideWorld or WorldWide or whatever. Does anyone even bother with his posts anymore?
There is Pyongshin Sanga or whatever whose mission is to defend Canada's honor from perceived insults. That's always refreshing.
IGTG has long since become a parody of himself.
Finally, there is BigVerne, whose only mission in life seems to be to define everyone as Moslem/Notmoslem. More than tiresome because it is false and destructively false.
HEY, guys! Every six months or so there is a glimmering that there is actually something else going on in your brain. The next time one of those 'moments' comes, try to feed it. Most of us live with a limited number of books and limited access to TV. We enjoy variety. Stimulation. Not the same damn thing time after time after time after time after time after time after time. |

| The thing I don't understand is why are they here? Why doesn't BigVerne go to a real political board. Or why doesn't Sundubuman go to an American board, or any of the people you talked about. Why this board and only one topic? They never post about Korea, and some of them aren't even here (I know Gopher isn't). So why do they post here only in the political arena. It is very strange. |

I agree it is very strange. I don't pretend to understand it. My gut reaction is that they are doing the "I was a geek in high school and I still think someone will find me either profound or interesting now that they went to college and got as educated as I was in 4th Grade" schick.
I don't include Gopher in that group. I know he is on a anti-anti-American crusade. I watched it develop last year and sympathize with him 97% of the time. He does have this major theme in his posts, but it is by no means the one note thing the others have going. He was very seriously into the immigration issue a few months ago (and I didn't believe he was as right-wing as he was portraying himself. I think he was playing a game with that one.)
But I agree with you, lao. It is strange that these guys come here and do a one note song. Most of the time I think they are the flakey foreigner sorts and avoid addressing them. Then sometimes I weaken in my resolve to ignore them and respond...and then regret that I wasted my time. I guess it's the optimist in me that doesn't want to believe anyone could graduate from a university and still be as silly as a high school sophomore. |

| As someone currently residing in Gwangju, I will rise to defend those who post on this forum from places other than Korea. I think most of them were probably drawn to Dave's because of an initial interest in Korea, but have decided to stick around the current events forum because they like the general atmosphere of the place, even if they didn't stay in Korea, or never even got here in the first place. Some of these posters are a big part of the dynamic of the forum, and you don't really need to be a Korean resident to discuss most of these topics. |

I still think of Gopher in the group, as he almost exclusively posts about America, but he is the one sane one of the group. |

pretty much sums it up for me. I am pretty sure gopher started becoming a large-scale contributer while he was in korea. I know I was, but can't remember if the current events forum was seperated from the rest before or after I had left korea. |

I guess that makes us and everyone else with an interest in politics "very strange" -- or, conversely, Laogaiguk narrow-minded and unimaginative.
Laogaiguk: it sounds like you would establish and enforce a South Korea residency requirement and, if not abolish the Current Events Forum, then at least require anyone who writes there to place an equal number of posts asking about Midnight Runs, diploma or passport seizures, and visa requirements, or denouncing drunk ajoshis, ajummas, or Korean racism and xenophobia on the "living-in-Korea" fora to meet your "normality" needs.
In any case, I'll take this time to thank OntheOtherHand, Kuros, Bucheon, and a small handful of others for exchanging views and pms on a wide variety of topics, esp. Classical authors like Xenophon, Polybius, and Plutarch. Outside of the Academe, I could not have found a more interesting or intelligent group of people to chat with while killing a few months.
I'll still post for a few more weeks, but now being as good a time as any, nice knowing you, gentlemen. |

Very good Gopher. Good response. I am curious though as you are the one who only posts about anti-americanism, how I am the unimaginitive one. That doesn't seem quite right, does it?
Second, along with your insults, which I didn't do just saying it was strange, I never said there should be South Korea residency only rule. I just said it was strange. And it is. Not to mention the amount of effort. To be so focused on something is not healty. I am sure there are threads in other forums that must be of some interest, but you guys never post in them. |
