I'm also starting to figure out that it is not in your best interests to stay in the Gepik program for more than 2 years.

After 2 years you sign for EPIk and get a higher pay scale... |

Today I signed my new GEPIK contract. Contrary to the alarmists on this board, there was no mention of enforced 3 hour visits to the local Education office on Friday or any other day.
I did not get a raise, but I reached an "understanding" with regards to vacation time in lieu...which I'd rather have anyway.
In fact the only major change I noticed was that contribution leave was reduced. In the old contract one received 2 hours of contribution leave for each hour of OT class taught. Now it's one for one. Since I never teach any OT anyway (the school's too small) this was not a concern. |
I signed the contract yesterday for my third year with GEPIK. The only down-side was the introduction of a security deposit which means the school takes 900,000 Won over the first three months which they'll return at the end. I know that many people payed this last year, but after two years without it, I made it clear that I wasn't happy, but would sign none-the-less.
The overtime clause relating to extra vacation being reduced doesn't affect me since I get unofficial time off when there are no students anyway.
The only thing that surprises me about your post is the lack of a raise. If you're Level 3, you'd move up to Level 2 -likewise with Level 2 to Level 1 if you've got a TEFL. I'm on Level 1, and was presented with the new contract at the same pay as I'm on currently. I pointed out the clause that states Level 1 teachers are eligible for a 100,000 Won raise each subsequent year, which would depend on your Principal's opinion on your previous contribution to the goals of the Board of Education. In other words, if they want you to stay, they ought to give you a raise. If they don't, then they don't value your contribution -but why would they want you to stay for another year?
My Principal was happy to give me the pay-rise, which is only fair, considering the rise in living costs at the very least. |

(numbers are mine)
1. Some people, like Mr. Grotto have gotten that clause removed claiming violation of the labour standards.
2. Like I already said, I asked for and got extra vacation time instead of the raise. More personal time to pursue my own interests is worth more to me, than a few hundred dollars...but to each his own. |

The main problem is that they have removed the holiday. While all Korean tachers have 5 weeks off we're left to grind out a silly summer camp. Even the Korean teachers feel sorry for us.
My resigning won't happen without more time off. More than the 2 weeks extra. I want to be EQUAL! |
So....you want to go to school Saturdays? Do you also want to do piles and piles of useless paperwork? Sounds great.... |
