Schools juggle holidays for Muslims, other faiths

Hell, most holidays aren't even Christian anymore, and if they are, they are pretty commercialized past what they were intended for (not that that is bad). Christmas and Easter are the only religious ones I can think of, and like I said, are barely religious anymore. Thanksgiving, Labour Day, Independence Day or Canada Day, Boxing Day (not in the US), New Year's Day, Rememberance Day or Memorial Day, etc etc. They are not even religious.

To all these people demanding holidays for their religion, seriously, go screw yourselves. I am waiting for BigVerne to post, but I might actually agree somewhat with him this time.

I disagree with this. If a school only has a couple of kids who are Hindu, for example, then no, it doesn't make a lot of sense to shut down the whole school just for them. Just give them personal excuses to miss school. (Enough kids skip school to get haircuts that I don't see how it would be any more disruptive for some to miss class for something that may be important in their family.) If there is a significant number of students who are members of a religion, then it begins to make sense to accomodate their culture, since Christianity is accomodated.

I for one think the American school calendar is kind of screwy anyway and should be re-designed for a non-agricultural world. I'd like to see a week vacation each month with the school year going more year-round with a somewhat longer break in summer (or some other time of year).

I totally disagree. School boards are trying 3 months on, 1 month off. I really like that idea. But one week off a month is not good (even with one extended vacation). Many children go to camps for more than 1 week. It also doesn't give families enough time for a real vacation (if they can). Also, It would make school seem like all year and there would be no sense of a real vacation. One week doesn't give enough time to just lay back. This might techically be best in the idea of education, never letting the children actually just let go as it's only a week, but I don't like the idea of that for children.

you are forgetting one thing too, many schools don't have airconditioners and there is no money for them. May seem stupid, but it's a big deal.
