Pardons for top tycoons?
Rumors swirl before Aug. 15
The ruling Uri Party may recommend presidential pardons for chiefs of major conglomerates convicted of corruption and illegal political donations, senior officials said yesterday. President Roh Moo-hyun will carry out a special pardon and amnesty to observe Liberation Day, which falls on August 15.
"As a way to help revitalize the economy, the government and the ruling party are seriously considering whether to pardon the chiefs of large businesses," said Rhee Mok-hee, a lawmaker in the Uri committee on public livelihood and economy.

Convicted Businessmen May Get Pardons
It was found out on Thursday that five economic organizations, including the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), officially asked Cheong Wa Dae to pardon and reinstate 55 businessmen.... FKI [Federation of Korean Industries] announced, "We put businessmen who received sentences for violating laws by performing obsolete and irrational business practices on the list. Although it might be seen as controversial, we tried to benefit as many businessmen as we could."

IOC member, sons of ex-presidents are on the list
"The pardons of business leaders are designed to solve the top priority issue of reviving the economy," Justice Minister Kim Sung-ho said.
Park Jie-won, who was convicted of charges of accepting bribes from two conglomerates and of playing a key role in the covert money transfer of $500 million to Pyongyang before the 2000 inter-Korean summit, also got a pardon.
