I have a lesson that's titled "Family, Friends and Teachers".
So far I have two basically sentences we're going to work on
_____ is my _______ (Jack is my Father)

and

My father/he is _______ (My father is short).

I have a short crossword for them to find family relations (5-10mins max)
And I will have them list their family members names and have partners guess who is the mother/father etc...

Anyone else have some fantastically long ideas (and I don't think i'll have access to a printer...barf!).

Thanks for helping me do my job folkS! Embarassed Smile

I dont know what level you're teaching, but you could do an acting exercise. My mother is .... act out beautiful with long hair or something...
My father is.... act out tall with big muscles, and a mustache...
What about a guessing game? Like twenty questions about family members... Is your father tall? No. Is your father fat? No. Does your father have a mustache? Yes.

I could think of some more, btu i hvae class in a few minutes and my ideas aren't very good.

Sounds like they are pretty young students.

~ Have them draw a family member, then collect them and tape them up to the front of the class (somewhere they can all be easily seen together). Have one student stand and describe one of the drawings while the others listen and try to guess who's relative they are describing. "That's Min-hos' mother!"

~ Put them into groups of three and designate one to be the speaker and the others artists. The speaker describes a family member while the other two draw what they hear. The speaker must not see the drawing until the picture is finished. A really fun activity as the pictures invariably turn out looking really hilarious. Just don't pair up three boys who only want to draw the others families as monkeys or something. When they have finished, the two artists hold up the picture and describe it to the rest of the class.

You can draw boxes in a family tree style format. You can play family Jeopardy. The key is to have them repeat the word and sentence as many times as possible. I think the more animated you can be, the better. Like tall, arms high, fat arms out, etc.... Good Luck!!!! How long is your class?

In the Family Tree department, you can do a lot of questions if your diagram is detailed enough (or you hand out a list of sentences describing the people in the family tree)...

Is Jane wearing a blue dress?
How many dogs does Ann's brother have?
Are Frank's younger brothers in high school?
What is Sandy's grandmother on her mother's side wearing?
How many girl cousings does X have?

YOu could also do a sentence completion drill. One person starts a sentence about a family member, and someone else completes it. They would need to use correct pronouns and the like.
I will keep adding ideas.......I wanna earn that beer if it's to be had Very Happy

Is this going to be an observation class, by any chance?? Wink

I like the picture dictation idea, but could require more complex language than you're suggesting by your sample sentences.

Howabout a variation, which will practice adjectives and plurals? For example, 'Draw 2 angry fathers.' 2 students race to the board and draw instructions. Then, students take over instruction calling. You also have to watch out - if your class are a sensitive class, there could be some tears at misrepresentations of individual fathers!! It happened in one of my classes when a kid drew a man with a tie which looked like a noose and a mustache which looked like that of Hitler... A punch up ensued...

Also, phonetic dictation of 5 family words (if they know phonics) or just a regular spelling test of 5 family words?

Cartoon. What is each member of the family in the picture saying to each other? Students come to front of class and read what they wrote?

Students can also bring in family photos and talk about them with simple sentences.

P.S. I don't drink beer. I only like mineral water or champagne.

Kids love "memory " games. You can have "Parts". You can play "Build the twins". They have to turn over 2 matching body pieces, and they can start to make 2 people. They can trade them too. Its fun, and they will make the oddest people you have ever seen This will not take you long to make. Make one set, copy it, have them help color it, cut out small recatngle shapes of dark color paper, glue on body parts, and have fun. If you can laminate them this game will last you for a long time.

wow.
You guys are FANTASTIC! I can't WAIT for my next set of ideas.

I have a family tree right now. The problem is that there is a HUGe range of ability: There are 4 VERY smart gr.6 students and 3 VERY not smart gr. 4 students. I can't make it TOO easy or TOO hard.

I now have a family tree. I'll probably have them do the crossword, then use those words to fill in the family tree (with some names).
After that, I'll probably do the drawing of relatives and work on some descriptors (the big problem being that the SMART gr. 6 students already KNOW all that while the gr. 4 students may not even be able to SAY it).

They know "She is tall" (a la the "great" elementary school curriculum) and variations on that. But I haven't taught them "she has ____" so that may be next. And the three (terrible) gr. 5 students could use a brush up on that stuff too!

great. Decided. Hopefully all of this will fill up 2x50.

Last class I was teaching "What do you want to do this summer". I wanted to sing a song but I had NO IDEA what I was going to do . It was great to just start playing the guitar and then bust into something. The kids LOVED it! I'm hoping I can TOTALLY luck out with that again.

I forgot to mention: These are gr. 4-6 some of whom have a GREAT grasp on the curriculum.

Round 2:
Picnic/ Travel.
A terrible topic that I didn't choose.
Target Sentences:
I want to go to _________
________ has ________ ________ (list some adjectives and nouns together).
Where do you want to go?

I figure I'd do some brain storming. Definately take a map to class. The library is closed these days; too bad.

Probably also do "The memory game".

There is a memory game you could use here.

You can start by saying: At the picnic I want to eat + food item and the next person repeats what you said and then adds another food item.

I love to take photos. I take photos of all sorts of things, the people on the street, looking out the window, my glasses on the table...

Bring in some photos. Have toe kids tell u what they see, and what else they would put in there. For example, if they see people on the street, they can tell you that there should be cars, or an old lady with food on her head, etc. You can ask them who, what, where when why how... etc.

Who is in the picture?
Where are they going? Where can they go, where cant they go,
What are they wearing, what season is it, hows the weather? Don't forget it can be sunny in the winter also.

How did they get there? By car. plane, train? What are their names? What did they have for breakfast?

Bring in lots of photos or magazine pictures. Have them pick any 3, or YOU give them 3. (or 4 or 2, what ever...)

Have them tell u a story. You listen. Have them ask YOU questions.
Read them a poem. Have them make the next verse. Tell them a story. Have them tell you the nxt page, or read them a story and have them tell you the beginning.

Make new characters, take away a character.

Have them teach you something.

I can go on and on.

Read a simple story.

Write an acrostic poem. That is have them write their name and something with the first letter, for example:

H -hates to do home work
A - always late
E - eats kimchee
Y - you like me?
O - oranges taste good
N - NO MORE HOMEWORK!!
G - GOod by

Write your name for an example. That is fun.

Any more questions???
