Grrr... rant...
I've gotten Korean visas before in Washington DC and Bangkok. In both cases I picked up my visa the next day. Well, this time, I thought I'd take a little trip to Vancouver since I've never been there. I booked a flight, made plans, etc. Finally I got around to calling the Korean embassy just to make sure that they can do it in a couple of days.
WRONG!
They said it takes 5 business days to process my visa! WTF?! Five days?!
Seattle said they can actually do it same day if I bring it in in the morning. Guess I'm going to Seattle... |

The Korean embassy is in Ottawa. Anyways, even in Toronto it takes 4 to 5 business days to get it done. |

Ajgeddes, I think he meant the Korean embassy in Vancouver. I know it is frustrating cause I had to wait five days for mine as well, but it doesn't make any sense to blame Canada, it is a Korean issue.

| The embassy is in Ottawa, in Vancouver it is a consulate, thank you. I was just saying it is the same in Toronto as it is in Vancouver. |

ah vancouver consulate. when i sent them my degree for notarized copies, they didnt send me all the notorized copies I had paid for. claimed that i didnt pay the gst and pst. but on the phone i asked if there was taxes and they said no. than they gipped me money. crazy. |

Sorry, I was told there was an embassy in Vancouver. My bad. Like you said, the wait is the same in either province.

Embassies are only in national capital cities. Offices in secondary cities are called consulates. |

Almost correct, but not quite. Embassies are not necessarily in capital cities, but almost always are. The real difference between an embassy and a consulate is their role. Consulates handle consular services like visas, passport renewals, minor diplomatic issues, and such. Embassies roles are to handle diplomatic issues between governments. Since embassies often provide consular services or have consulates attached, we tend to confuse the two.
And to the OP: The Korean consulate is run by Korea, not by Canada, but yes, they're a pain in the ass. Government offices and airports have something in common: I've never seen one that I've wished to spend any more time than necessary in it. |
