I have no intentions of leaving Korea? Is it a big hassle to get a new visa, or what?

I'm sure this ground has been covered before. Even some search terms would be helpful.

Once your boss releases you and cancels your E2, you will have 14 days in which to leave Korea. If you find another job within that time and they can get the paper work processed and a visa issuance number, then you just do a visa run to Japan. If not, then you just go to Japan and come back. Smile

Actually, you can just change your ARC over to your new employer without a visa run. At least I did. YMMV. HTH.

If your school fails, it's unlikely they're going to go to immigration and cancel all the visas - pretty darned embarassing. They'll probably just feel bad and tell you to go find another job.

Take your time, get some privates in the short term, and look for the best job you can find. Taking your time is the best part.

Back in the IMF days, your hagwon failing (particularly in the first half of your contract) was considered a "golden ticket". You've got the 1-year E2 in your passport, and can start teaching privates everywhere...

Just don't get caught actually teaching. Really not that hard if you use a pseudonym and don't leave a papertrail.

Ah, the good old days. Nowadays you're as likely to be turned in by another english teacher as you are a doorman or ex-girlfriend.

Out of curiousity... Once your contract is cancelled can your school still eff with you?

Can they screw you over with immigration somehow?

This happened to me. My school went out of business and my owner disappeared. I went to find a different job and they told me that i had to have a release letter or they wouldnt hire me. Finally I had a korean friend pose as the owner's employee and give a letter to immigration. I had already gotten my ARC so I had to make two visa runs in less than 4 months. Good luck, just make sure you get that letter of release...or dont get your ARC until you sign with a new company.

Hmmmmm, my school will probably limp along. I have dined and drank with the father of one of my students who told me that he regretted taking his daughter out, but that the school's (lack of any real) system really turned him off.

I imagine that if push came to shove, the director ( a rich woman who does not spak English) would try to fire me as a bad teacher (which almost none of my student's parents could believe) or just not pay me and have me go away.

But I don't want to leave Korea. As opposed to many of the posters here, I like this place, despite all the miscommunications and frustrations.
