Everydavid left Vancouver on June 10th: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=53072&highlight=
Last I heard (14th) he was averaging 100K a day through the Rockies. He's doing this adventure on his own and he's probably going to have some good stories to tell by the end of it.
We're presently taking bets on how many flat tires
I'm sticking with at least 5.
Go Diamond Dave, wish you a great ride--Newfoundland or bust!

I got an email from Diamond Dave today--his progress:
Quote: |
the Internet is sketchy at best through the prairies. I did manage to check my mail at a tourist bureau as I entered Saskatchewan, I was however only able to read and not reply.
So far 3 flats is my total, the most recent was this shard of metal that I had to struggle to get out!
I have met several others doing the same trip as mine. One Englishman -- Barry is doing it on a 50 or 60 yrs old 3 speed bike. Another man of 70 who is ahead of me, though he is hotelling it along the way guaranteeing a good nights sleep and not having to pack everything up every morning. Meeting lots and lots of nice people.

3 flats and he's only in Saskatchewan! |

Dave just finished 5 years in Korea. He'll probably be back in the fall.

A 50 or 60 year-old 3-speed bike? Gotta give him big points for sticking to the basics!!!
The 70 year-old biking across Canada though, wow!!! |

My mom celebrated turning 50 by biking from the Pacific (Washington state) to the Atlantic (New Jersey shore) with side trips up to Canada along the way. No idea how many flat tires. Completely self-sufficient though she admits to the occasional hotel room. She was alone for most of it as all the biking buddies she started out with dropped out before they were even halfway across. What I thought was amazing and what also worried me to death the entire time is that she has a severe dizziness problem...something wrong with her inner ear. When it hits, she tends to tip over and start puking...and that's just when she's walking/standing. Can't imagine how she stayed on a bike as much as she did.
And me? I wish I lived closer than the three minutes it takes me to walk to work. |

Holy *beep* you know Diamond Dave? He was my roommate and bud in Montreal--I've known Dave since about '91.
Actually he was the one who convinced me to go to Korea
And you're right, he's a stellar human being.
Are you sure we have the right Diamond Dave? He's the guy holding me up in this pic: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=57297&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=150 |

Dave is awesome!
I don't know if he's ever told you about our British Embassy Ball jamborees but it's something you have to go to with him in Seoul if you ever get a chance. He always takes great photos for everyone. Ask him about the Stilton
I'll let him know you send him best wishes next time he appears on MSN. It's been sporadic since he's logging in at tourist stops along the way but I'm sure I'll hear from him when he's in Montreal shortly. |

Diamond Dave progress update--just received an email--2 more flats and a rim! :
Quote: |
I have had two more flats, making the total at 5. I had to replace a whole rim in Riviere-du-Loup as it was on the verge of disintegrating right under me! I had a high quality rim on it but it could not put up with the weight of my ass and the baggage, Oh well!!
I am in Gaspe right now and head off to Perce tomorrow, then off to N-B and beyond.
