Hi,

When I received my E2 visa at the Korean Embassy in Bangkok in May, I was only issued a 3 month visa? I've always assumed that come August I'll need to go to Incheon (I live and work in Ansan) and re-apply for a new visa. However a friend of mine who has been here a couple of years says that this is not necassary as I have my ARC, and the date on that it the date I'm allowed to stay until.

Is there any truth in this?

Surely the visa is what you need to even be in the country and the ARC is what you need to work in the country. I'll have to go to Incheon right?

Any advice?

The 3-month specification on the VISA stamp refers to the amount of time you have to actually enter Korea and begin your period of sojourn.

If you look closer at the visa stamp, it should state "period of sojourn 1 year".

Your ARC date does specify the exact time peroid you may remain in Korea under your current VISA sponsorship.... so your friend is right.

The VISA permits your activities in Korea, and period of solourn. The ARC registers you as a resident.

Your visa stamp in your passport indicates your status when you enter (E2), the length of sojourn [how long you can remain in the country] (1Y) and the validity of your allowed entry (90 days from issue).

Your ARC has 2 dates on it. The date of issue and the date you MUST leave the country (expiry date).

Your friend is correct. You are happy until your ARC expiry date.

I think this must have been an issue that confused a LOT of people - I know that every time I picked up my passport in Osaka on a visa run, there were always people checking it and going to the counter to ask why it was only good for 3 months.

Anyway I got a new visa a month or so ago, and I noticed they have changed the visa to read more clearly. Now instead of "EXPIRY DATE" it says "FINAL ENTRY DATE."

Anyway, yes as the eye and ttompatz said, that is the ENTRY DATE on your visa -- you can only enter within that 3 month window. The PERIOD OF SOJOURN is the length of time you are allowed to stay for and it shoudl read 01Y meaning one year.
