yea, this place must be blacklisted, whatever that does. i might light the whole place on fire instead. (kidding..i think..Wink)

i still work there. and not only do they not pay people on time, (i'm still waiting on that 500,000 they couldn't manage to find for july 15's payday..fingers crossed it'll come SOON! jeez...) or give them their bonuses...they're really oddly abusive and mean.

i was teaching a class of seven 10-year-olds today, for 80 mins, and it was a new class for me...summer session has started, so new classes...9am-5pm instead of 4pm-9pm.

but this class has no books, of course...just..'well, talk to them about their favourite animal, or something.' was what i was told just before the class.

anywho, in the 2nd 40 mins, i was using some markers and coloured pencils for an activity, and one of 'em broke, and a girl ran out to quickly sharpen it at the front desk. like, ya know, one would do. then another pencil broke, and i told another girl to just go sharpen it too, so she went.

(i actually was knocked out with how good and sweet these kids were...i was enjoying teaching them, and talking to them, books or no books. it wasn't a weird situation where 2 bad kids just got up and left the classroom at the same time to run thru the halls, 'cause they needed to 'sharpen pencils' they'd broken on purpose)

they came back, followed by the scary tall male 'secretary,' who YELLED AT ME, in front of the kids, for letting kids out of the classroom during class time! (i've worked at this place for over 2 years...have never heard it was against a rule to let kids sharpen a pencil or use the bathroom during class time, not even from the new owners.)

i just said..'uh...they were sharpening their pencils...'...he yelled back' YOU HAVE THEM DO THAT BETWEEN CLASSES!'...i said.."but what if one breaks DURING class time?"....and he didn't answer it...just left...told the kids the same thing in korean, and was gone.

well, that put a downer on the rest of the class, let alone my mood for the rest of the day.

lordie, what a bloody place. it used to be so damn nice. i dunno what's up with these new owners, but they're not so nice, or logical. no one ever ever work here, please.

Did I miss something or did no one say the name of the place? Somehow everyone seems to know it, and work there, though.

No one said the name. Stakay actually replaced me, and joyfulgirl still works there, just like she did when I was there. Hobophobic worked there as well.

Why on earth would you put up with anyone yelling at you in front of your students like that?

I would have walked out right then and there!

Agreed. There would have been a verbal lashing to follow soon after (in front of the students, no. But after class, that secretary would have got it full bore!)

Willikers...that place used to be somewhat great (had 4 years in there)...sounds like crap for sure now...I need to get back there and check to make sure my picture is not on the wall in the front lobby area...

...I still don't know why you didn't (don't) just look for a new job...and get canned once you find one...do a visa run to Japan and visit your sister in the process or something....they've treated all 3 of you guys like sheot...

...are you the only foreigner there now?

yea, i agree, about how i shouldn't have let him yell at me like that...i complain here, but yet i let myself work unpaid and be yelled at.

but it's really a bit of an odd situation for me at the moment...i've been in korea, at this school, for 2+ years, and i basically just want to go home for a break at this point. in a BIG way. i haven't had a proper holiday since i got here, and haven't been home. i want (need) a few months home, to see the folks and all. i'd like to come back later, maybe, to Korea..

but i've lost all desire to look for a new job and commit to a new year here...so, i'm just hanging on at this hell hole and trying to figure out how to stay sane thru the next 5 months, and trying to understand how to 'be' around these people so i can get paid. i want my salary, and my bonus. it may never come, the way they are, but i'm holding out hope. i should be more agressive, but i know that'd just get me fired a coupla months before i'm supposed to leave, and i'd lose the bonus, and whatever.

it's an absolute shit situation, and any new teacher would be a fool to come to this school.

well, as people have said, it used to be sweet...the new owners are the problem.

and, hobophobic...no, yer pic isn't on the wall anymore...in fact, that whole wall is gone. there were major renovations when they arrived, and seemed to be 'sh*ting' money. there is no teacher's room anymore, just a big ol' lobby.

...and i know they've treated us 3 like sheot. but, like i said...i don't want a new job...i want a break.

..there's an irish guy as well now. and 3 korean teachers....2 of whom i met this wednesday, 'cause the previous korean teachers had enuf and quit.

2 words for you, Joyfulgirl, go home. It sounds like the place is tearing you up and that doesn't sound good. If you have the money available, just buy the ticket. It doesn't sound like you want to stay except for money that may or may not come. It sounds like a lot of stress and that just ruins your life. Though, if you have to stay, for whatever reason, I understand. Good luck and sorry about what's going on for you right now.

Who does that secretary think he is? How can you teach when they owe you 500 bucks? I'd be screaming at everyone. Bunch of fuking sadists.

joyfulgirl sounds sad and that sucks. Don't be sad, get angry. Tell them what to do with their crummy job and find another, better, job in Korea. Then drop by every week or so to let the new teacher know what they're in for.

Book a plane ticket in advance for 30-35 days, and then turn in your resignation. Leave on the airplane and get a nice home cooked meal.

I worked there and lots of other friends have done the ol' W/Ewha A.L.S. thang.

Is that old bitty, "Susan," still playing the part of Villain #1? Christ, I hate that thing!

Are you housed in a villa underneath "Crazy Ajuma?" I gave her this moniker when, in her 3-floor shanty (house #17 on some street around the corner from the Shijang), she would constantly scream bloody murder for whatever reason at her son (now 25 years old and a grad of Korea University) and daughter (23 or so). Anti-whitey the whole lot of 'em, Newf, they would ask me to give them free English lessons on the premise that I was a guest in Korea and their mum owned the house. Told the kid to get lost a few times and so he used to mouth off at me whenever he was on the piss with his goofy friends from uni. What a load!

Patricia, the quite overweight, almost an ajuma by now, thing from Head Office in Kangnam, would laugh about it because she does not give a rat's behind about foreign staff, the quiff.

For good times, try "Popcorn Ajuma's" chicken hof around the corner from Exit Number 7 at Sinjeongnegori Station. When you get to the top of the exit's staircase, turn around and look at the corner of the alley going to your left. Popcorn Ajuma's hof is the third door in on your right as you walk down the alley.

A guy named Greg from San Diego, who was on all the Ewha A.L.S. ads back in 2000-2002, and two British brothers from Grimsby, England used to drink pints of draught beer there frequently, and the place soon became a "foreigner's bar." It likely is still just that, eh. Popcorn Ajuma is a swell lady who'll cheer up anybody.

Best of luck and threaten a visit to the tax office, the labour office, Seoul Immigration Office, the National Human Rights Commission, Seoul Foreign Worker's Labour Counselling Office (run by Padre Kim), and the National Pension Office if Brian Lee and his kin do not do right by you. Fifty bucks says that the institute has been committing tax and pension fraud like they did to moi back in 2000-2001.

Too bad.

Try The Club DeBut on I'taewon's Hooker Hill for a swell time. Run by "Miss Polly" (Mrs. Song), it is the little joint with a yellow stucco facade right across the street from Olde Towne Tavern on The Hill.

She's a swell lass, and she'd like you for sure. Try her place out any day or night of the week.

Yeah, but the place must not be that bad if you are still there, not getting your full pay and getting yelled at. Are you addicted to abuse? If I don't get paid...I don't work. If some yuppy, pampered, living at home, Korean gets in my grill about classes...I tell him to go *beep* himself. And if he's got the stones to take it further, I welcome the opportunity. Really, it is people like you that make allow these idiots to continue to screw teachers with their pay, housing, etc.
