And no, I don't care if my spelling is bad. My wife toasted the Laptop. She didn't understand that it needs ventilation in order to breathe; the fan isn't enough on those things. Anyways, the fan doesn't work. The laptop shuts down due to the over heating. I have begun to take it apart and realize this is no easy feat. Anyone ever change the fan on a laptop? Demo, Giant?
What kind of work am I looking at? |

Sorry man...never done it myself, though I would probably try if the occasion presented itself.
Is it under warranty? This is the deal breaker. If yes, then don't do it man! Just get it looked at by a "pro". Under normal use, it shouldn't overheat, regardless of the ambient temperature. How did she cook it? What was the situation such that it was getting so hot?
If the warranty has expired, then give it a go, but I would surmise it will be really tricky. |

yeah, the laptop is 2 years old. Her desk is a particle board type desk. She didn't have the laptop elevated to dissipate the heat. Now, the fan won't turn on. I am about to get into taking it apart. The warranty has expired.
You should have felt the desk and the bottom of the laptop. I burned my hand!!!!

yeah, it won't be easy. Somehow, the screen is connected to the casing. Now THAT is going to be a pain. |

Good luck! Though, if you are opening it up, I am guessing that you are just going to scrap the notebook and get a new system since there is a lot of room for error with factory built laptop disassembly.
If you have to replace anything inside, it will be more worth it just to get a new computer. I fried an HP laptop a couple of years ago and had to replace, under warranty, the screen, the CPU, and the video card. If you have to pay for those out of your own pocket, that is almost the cost of a new computer. The same computer was being driven under the influence last year and ended up with a cracked windshield (screen), after a small kumdo tournament in the living room, and that repair, without warranty, was to cost me 830,000 won. Screw that! I bought a better desktop. |

what? this is bs... I take my laptop apart all the time to fix things on it... and I have an old old old Dell Latitude JGx series... like, we're looking at 6-7 years old.
Cuban, if you need help with the lappy, lemme know, I'm in Wonju as well and I'm fairly experienced with computer/laptop assembly/disassembly. It really shouldn't be particularly hard to replace the fan, but it really depends on how the computer was built. |

I'd take it to a shop and see what they say. |

that is the problem i'm havinig. I know it's not broken drivers, it has to do more with the video card/AGP port itself but I was putting it into laymans terms for the less experienced... especially considering some of the previous posts. I honestly would love to test any of you guys to troubleshoot the problem I've been having with my computer.
Anyway, ,sorry to hijack the thread cl, lemme know if you need help. |

BEWARE!!! A fire that destroyed several units in a townhouse fire in Vancouver was traced to a laptop that became so hot that it melted the glass top of a desk, fell through and ignited newspapers under the desk. Fire dept said if you leave a laptop on for extended periods of time unattended to be sure it goes into hibernate mode. |
